Large fire reported at oil refinery in Russia's Krasnodar Krai following Ukrainian strike

by Dmytro Basmat March 14, 2025 5:48 AM

A large fire covering over 1,000 square meters engulfed the Tuapse oil refinery in Russia's Krasnodar Krai overnight on March 14, regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said on Telegram.

Several explosions were heard by residents in the region around 5 a.m. local time. Videos posted on social media show a large fire burning in the location of the depot.

Kondratyev later claimed on social media that the explosions were a results of an attack carried out by Kyiv.

A gasoline storage tank is currently ablaze as over 100 emergency personnel are working to extinguish the blaze, Kondratyev added.

The Kyiv Independent cannot verify claims made by the Russian official. Ukraine's military has not yet commented on the attack.

Didn't the Saudis just recently abandon their production restrictions and are now back to pumping full bore?

That should drive the price down.

TRUMP SIDELINES TOP ENVOY AT RUSSIA’S REQUEST ??
quote:

NBC News reports that President Trump has removed Keith Kellogg, his special representative for Russia and Ukraine, from high-level peace negotiations—allegedly at Putin’s request. The Kremlin reportedly saw Kellogg as "too pro-Ukraine", leading to his exclusion from the recent Saudi peace talks. A Russian official told NBC: "Not our type of guy."

Ok, here we go, right on schedule from the KGB playbook on negotiations. Constant chops and changes to Trump's peace plan with the goal of:

1.) taking control away from the Americans and;

2.) frustrating them to the point of throwing up their hands and giving the Russians anything they want.

We can expect constant changes and new demands from Putin on a regular schedule. This is going to be a very long process which will try Trump's resolve to the last nerve. Again, Trump must step on this immediately and with great force. If he doesn't break the Russian's intent on defeating the peace process right now, he has lost. He may not know it yet, but the Russians are already have as much control as he does.

Back on March 7, two days after Trump removed intelligence sharing with the Ukrainians, it was noted that Russian sources reported 20 HIMARS strikes on occupied Donetsk. At the time, our question was:
quote:

Were they provided with targeting intel and data by the US? Or have they developed workarounds?

Well, we now seem to have our answer, which was the second of the above. The European GALILEO satillite system was supplied to the Ukrainians, who have the ability to use the feed for the weapon's targeting data.
quote:

GALILEO TEST SUCCESSFUL ??Ukraine used the European Galileo navigation system instead of GPS to fire two GMLRS at Russian positions on the left bank - Russian sources. If verified, Ukraine has successfully managed to lower its dependence on US satellite guidance systems and created interoperability between European systems and US weapons.
LINK

This was probably coordinated by the French, who never fully trusted the Americans and developed their own nuclear weapons and satillite systems. They may be assholes, but they are prescient assholes.

EU Agrees to Extend Russia Sanctions as Hungary Backs Down

quote:

According to Bloomberg, the EU has initiated a written procedure to extend sanctions against the Russian Federation for another six months. The process is expected to continue until tomorrow morning. This comes after three individuals were removed from the sanctions list at Budapest’s request. Jozwiak previously reported that Hungary agreed to give the "green light" only after three out of the eight individuals it had requested for removal were excluded from the sanctions list.
quote:

Moreover, EU foreign affairs and security policy spokesperson Anitta Hipper stated that Brussels is working on the 17th package of anti-Russian sanctions. As we previously reported, Russia has recently been actively demanding the lifting of some sanctions as part of negotiations for a peace agreement in Ukraine.

Orban caves yet again, as expected. Note that Fico also voted to extend sanctions. He seems to have learned his lesson after the substantial protest marches in Bratislava.

Why Wright recently stated that $50 per barrel was still profitable in the US. Russia's very inefficient production and transportation system is roughly $50 breakeven at least that was the case in 2015

Not really. They're planning on returning to late 2022 production numbers, which would not historically be considered full bore.

I don't doubt it.

This is a little off topic, but I've been watching a series called "Mysteries of the Abandoned". Many of the abandoned structures they show are stuff that was built by either the Nazis or by the USSR during the cold war.

I saw a segment last night about some rich guy from England who purchased a decommissioned Soviet Foxtrot-class submarine and has it moored somewhere in a small bay in England.

They were talking about how the Soviets used that diesel-engine technology from 1958 - 1983, while the west had switched to nuclear powered subs. They were cramped, noisy and smelly. They had one bathroom for 74 crew members and could stay submerged for only 2 days.

Listen to the language people use. It isn't about Orban being a 'Russian Stooge', its about him not bending the knee to every whim of the leftist crazies he has to deal with in the EU.

In the case of the USSR it was in large because of their multi year plans for increase of production. They needed to create demand to justify increase in production of various manufactured commodities. As it was explained to me by the head of the Moscow refinery in 1992, their GOST codes for construction was not about engineering but using more steel. So joint efficiencies in welding pressure vessels was not as important as using thicker steel, which was actually substandard by Western norms. In building construction, often times much more rebar was used than required for concrete construction and even to the point of aggregate in concrete unable to go between the rebar matrix and eventually causing spalling in concrete structures.

Those GOST building codes did not immediately change after the fall of the USSR. So the Russian engineer/manager could not use equipment I had for sale in CA from a Shell refinery, even though it was of higher quality than what he had in Russia.

BTW, they suspended those GOST codes for the full refineries and process units (especially to make premium gasoline for aviation fuel) shipped over from the US during Lend Lease. They were still in use there in 1992 (as identical units were still in use in the USA)

Trump claims he asked Putin to 'spare thousands of surrounded Ukrainian troops' in Kursk Oblast

by Tim Zadorozhnyy March 14, 2025 4:00 PM

U.S. President Donald Trump said his administration held "productive discussions" with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which he urged him to "spare" surrounded Ukrainian troops, he wrote in a Truth Social post on March 14.

"At this very moment, thousands of Ukrainian troops are completely surrounded by the Russian military, and in a very bad and vulnerable position," Trump wrote.

"I have strongly requested to President Putin that their lives be spared. This would be a horrible massacre, one not seen since World War II. God bless them all."

The statement comes as Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, arrived in Moscow on March 13 and met with Putin late in the evening, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed.

But that defeats the purpose of the EU. Hungary benefits far more from being in the EU than it would if it was independent and Orban isn't even clever with his demands. As in, he doesn't get very much from his positions as a negotiating tactic. Contrast that with Erdogan, who isn't part of the EU, but is the head of a larger, much more important country within the context of European security. The concessions he gets from the Europeans are far greater than anything Orban has won. No one accuses Erdogan of doing anything other than trying to maximize his own interests because Erdogan is blatant about the fact he's pursuing what he considers is in Turkey's interest. Orban is a relatively small player in European politics, and I'm struggling to see the benefits of his strategy for Hungary itself.

Col. MacGregor has been wrong virtually every time.
