He’s right about the information war though. It’s been a full court press. We never hear about Ukranian casualties unless they’re civilians. It’s a part of modern warfare and the Ukrainians, and really the west as a whole, have been engaging in it nonstop. And very successfully I might add.

Of course there is an information war. Fighting fire with fire is not the correct approach there.

What the guy could do, if he were so inclined, is cover the war and report both sides equally. Fill that niche and cure the problem he's railing against. Instead, he essentially chooses to become part of the information war.

Right. And as he also said in another tweet, we cheer them on. The sad reality, however, that NATO is not coming to the rescue.

They aren't part of NATO.

Russians pour a shitload of money into defense. I think the world is quickly realizing that that money may have been earmarked for defense, but clearly went elsewhere (unless the entire budget was a lie all along

There are reports that things are going so poorly for the Russians that they have now sent their entire military into Ukraine.

The Russian Patrol Ship, (Vasily Bykov) ship who killed the Ukrainian military on Snake Island, was sunk today by the Ukrainian Navy.

Field grade and general officers need to take off rank insignia and especially with hand motions never look like they are "directing traffic" on the battlefield. Also, they don't want their subordinates "bowing and scraping" to them in the open. They need to appear like an old NCO that keeps getting busted back to E5 every few years because he is a frickup. Then no sniper will waste shot on them.

Obviously, if they want to stay alive. OTOH the success of the offensive and maybe the survival of the regime itself is contingent on getting the army moving again, and a senior officer showing up at the front to inspire the troops and/or give them a boot in the arse is almost a Russian army trope. WWII histories are replete with stories of generals-sometimes Zhukov himself-appearing out of nowhere to sort out a hopelessly snarled traffic jam.

Russian perspective whilst ignoring

I was talking on the phone to a barrister in London this morning and he used whilst and I started laughing. Fortunately, Colin is a good friend, and whilst I don't think he understood the explanation he did understand he had tripped and fallen into an inside joke.

Im aware. Ukraine was promised security guarantees in exchange for disarming. Those aren't being honored. Zelensky rightfully increasingly angry about that. It's an Alamo situation. Again sad. A separate ongoing debate stemming from this is, faced with this knowledge was it the correct decision to refuse to agree to neutrality like finland. Would it have made a difference?

Now, that's an information war.

I saw that it was likely hit, but haven't seen that it sank.

In a way, Zelensky is bullying Putin and I'm lovin' it. Just read he has revealed his location in KIEV.

Coincidentally, or ironically, the ship's namesake was a controversial author whose novels portrayed the grim realities of life inthe Soviet army in WWII.

30 helicopters seems like exaggeration

Just a quick Google satellite search, I counted 34 helicopters sitting around at Kherson airport, which appears to double as some kind of helicopter base. That’s just a regular day. It ain’t that far fetched.

And they all probably got stalled backing out of the base.

Snake Island

There was archeological show a few years back - was that on the same Snake Island? Also - I'm trying to understand how that one ship was able to destroy the entire defenses on the island - it has a single gun as far as I can see.

ETA - nevermind - that Snake Island is in South America
