Surely you mean India and Pakistan?

Iran and Pakistan have improved their relations. A pew research poll said most Pakistanis actually view Iran positively, one of the few nations where that is true.

No... so much has been put into making sure India and Pakistan don't nuke each other. Sure, they hate each other (and its on the level of Ukraine and Russia, China and Taiwan, Israel and Palestine... the last being probably the most accurate since both were the result of British partitions of warring populations in the same territory), but India has more to worry about with China constantly screwing with them in very low key ways we don't even notice.

Iran and Pakistan are opposing Sects... that is ultimately incompatible. For all of the overtures and attempts at cooperation, stuff like this randomly happens...

CNN (1/18/2024): "Why are Iran and Pakistan striking each other's territory - and what does it have to do with the Middle East?"

Why wouldn't Argentina do this?

In short... Chinese jets are trash (see the vid I posted about Chinese arms), Russia doesn't have enough jets to export...

Maybe it has trouble translating Romanian to Russian?

One thing coming from this that might realign the world (as we're seeing with Argentina).

Faith in Russian military gear has been pretty much completely eroded, right?

That comes as countries who invested a lot in Chinese military gear (especially fighter jets) are finding out that they are junk and they can't keep them operating.

Both of these countries got their foot in the door of a lot of places by offering their arms at discounts, on easy credit payment plans, or outright for free or in trade for resources...

But if you're a country in a hot zone where you actually need to defend yourselves from active threats, you're screwed.

Niger just kicked the US out of its country and made a military alliance deal with Russia and stocked up on Russian arms. We'll see if Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have screwed themselves by joining team Russia in order to fight Jihadists. From what I've read they all got aggravated that the US had stopped being aggressive in that fight over the last 10 years, and exiting Afghanistan didn't help that perception, while it has heated up for them... but that's not a "peer-to-peer" army battle. And the Jihadists probably have Russian and Chinese arms, too.

The Pakistanis I know definitely do not like Iran. I was working in a plant there a few years back and there was a skirmish between Iran and Afghanistan. I'm not sure it even made the news here. In a meeting the Pakistanis joked about it and said that hopefully they'd kill each other off. And everyone laughed in agreement.

It was a bit different back when Iran was ruled by the Shah, because he was not Islamic but Secular, Afghanistan had been ruled by his cousin, then by what amounted to their extended family members in the cabinet who staged a coup...

But Khomeini and the Taliban are incompatible, and while the Taliban and Pakistan were allies, now the Taliban is (strangely) cozying up to India, which is not cool in the eyes of Pakistan...

Oy vey, what a mess...

The Shah was shia pet but tolerant of others. His overthrow was actually a Russian operation co-opted but the mullahs.

Trump advisers envision a ‘radical reorientation’ in which Washington takes a back seat to Europe — and cuts a deal with Putin over Ukraine.

I have no doubt Trump will make an effort to broker a deal... It remains to be seen if he can come up with a deal that both parties will agree to and maintain.. (Putin.. I'm looking at you...)

The wording makes me think Trump will just throw Ukraine under the bus and let Putin at least keep the territory he has... maybe take more.

but Putin will not "maintain" anything... he'll just bandage together his military and take the rest when he thinks he can. Why wouldn't he? He's getting away with it.

Trump has made a lot of statements all subject to interpretation.

IMO, no way that he brokers anything which makes him look like he got snookered in the deal.

He got away with taking Crimea and for Georgia, but he hasn’t gained much of anything in this SO. In fact I believe his gains were very expensive to the point that if you were keeping score I’d say he has lost.

Ukraine has lost too, but they didn’t start the war, Russia did.

Modi went to Russia, yesterday... I saw people angered, and... it seemed weird.

But...

MSN/Newsweek: "Putin Backs Down Over Modi's Mercenary Demand"

Russia will discharge all Indians who are fighting for Moscow's forces in Ukraine following a deal between Vladimir Putin and Narendra Modi, it has been reported.

Indian media outlet NDTV said the leaders discussed the fate of dozens of Indian troops who claimed they were tricked into taking up a fighting role after being persuaded by agents to go to Russia on the pretext of getting high-paying jobs. Two Indian men have reportedly died in the war in Ukraine.

Russia has been luring Indian males with job offers, and even discount vacation trips, then conscripting them by force... wow...

Your interpretations put far more faith in him than mine.

Resuscitating the Taliban by negotiating a withdrawal deal from Afghanistan with THEM makes him seem like he got snookered to me (and yes, I still blame Biden for being dumb enough to go through with that disaster)

I know Russia is signing up fighters from the Middle East, Asia and Africa...

but this was the first I heard of them lying about what it was people were signing up for... maybe I'd just missed that detail... or maybe Indians weren't falling for the military pitch...
