You may not like here politics or her stance on abortion but she is preeminent when it comes to all things Russia. I would also disagree with your characterization as her being "awful" but to each his own.

I don't think that's true from an academic perspective. Or at least I doubt other Russia subject matter experts would believe Ioffe to be among them. She doesn't teach, do scholarship, I'm not aware that she's involved in Russo-American relations in any capacity, etc.

She's likely akin to thousands of other Russian-Americans with strong educational backgrounds on Russian topics who can provide some insights at a time like this (and has Russian friends/family as sources), but at this point she's very much a political pundit/journo.

Julia Ioffe, who I think is a dishonest and awful person, claims a lot of people she knows (she's from Russia) are racing for the borders to try and get out ahead of it. Lots of people trying to leave with very limited options to do so.

She’s Jewish, so that’s probably a reasonable statement.

Most of her friends are probably Jewish, they likely have friends or family in Israel, if not in the United States. They could probably afford to go too.

The only other people who could leave are the super rich, who have multiple passports.

I spoke with a friend in Saint
Petersburg yesterday. She was just sad. But there’s nowhere she could go. They’ll just have to survive.

Fun fact: Shah of Irans sister stayed at my grandparents house in pine bluff for like a month after she was exiled during the 1979 Iranian revolution.

My mom's rich cousin in Beaumont(yes, Beaumont has ballers) has a ring that belonged to the Shah's wife. They sold off her jewelry when they fled Iran.

"Everyone is fricking stunned," says one source close to the Kremlin. Another source says no one in the presidential administration expected a full-scale war—or the sanctions.

Biden tried to warn him. I guess he thought it was all bullshite. I hate to say it but like Obama's line in the sand in Syria.

I don't doubt she was told that, just like soldiers telling Ukranians they thought it was a training exercise

But how much of this narrative is attributable to the reality that in a week Russians are going to be all "Putin, never heard of him!"

It's just not realistic that all these people didn't know anything. We watched it on OSINT for weeks, and while I acknowledge the media limitations in Russia, it's not North Korea.

So if Putin gets retired with extreme prejudice and Russia starts disengaging, do the sanctions come off pretty quickly or is Russia fricked for the foreseeable future?

It was like a week ago people were saying there was no way he invaded Ukraine. The guy doesn't give two shits. He wants to restore the USSR by any means possible.

They blocked cards from sanctioned Russian banks, but not sure the entire network is down if you aren't using a western card

Anybody with common sense knew. That kind of buildup is too big and expensive not to use.

I mean, clearly the Ukrainian people themselves were also skeptical that it would actually happen. They were going about their normal lives up until the bombs starting falling.
