I am serious. Our founding fathers had no intention of us being the “worlds police”.

Explain Tripoli to me, while a founding father, Jefferson, was president.

Barbary pirates were kidnapping American sailors and demanding crazy high ransoms. Jefferson had already visited North Africa to tell them to knock it off because we were a new and poor country who could not afford to pay their ransom. The Barbary pirates didn’t listen so Jefferson introduced them to the concept of “frick around and find out”. What we did in Tripoli had nothing to do with being world police and everything to do with protecting American shipping.

Russia was doing this rather impressive balancing act, where they maintained good relations with Israel, Syria, and Iran, simultaneously. It was probably only possible because of the large population of Jews from the former Soviet Union in Israel, and the continued cultural link between Russia and Israel. And also a quarter of the Russian oligarchs are Jewish, and most seem to have dual citizenship with Israel. So there are economic ties there too. Israel also had good reason for working with the Russians though, they didn't want the Russians to provide Israels neighbors with weapons which could upset the power balance in the region.

The war really killed that for them, the Israelis may have tolerated the current state of the Iranian Russian relationship, but they're not happy to see Russia engaging in large commercial projects with Iran, or Moscow selling SU-35s to Iran. And Moscow was only getting more frustrated with Israeli attacks in Syria.

This was probably coming, no matter what, and was inevitable once Russia turned to Iran for help in the fall of 2022.

I’d love to hear why sending all this money/resources to Ukraine is better than using that to build a 20 foot wall across the southern border.

You need an aerial shot to understand crowd size. If you look though, you can see the boundaries of the crowd on two sides, starting at the five second mark.

Because of the relatively low losses, and the fact the economy is good for ordinary people right now, I don't think you'll see any major turmoil.

More about being sent to a gulag. Tucker's $100 of groceries is equivalent to 1/3 to 1/2 of a Russian's monthly pay. Not that good at all unless you buy what the Kremlin has been selling.

Your posit was based on the assumption that but for the money sent to Ukraine the Southern border would currently be locked down tighter than a crab's arse. Do you think this is true? If you do not think this is true then you argument fails. It also avoids the fact that the US can do more than one thing at a time.

Poor people are more likely to support the war. Liberals, the people who would oppose the war, are usually middle class, and see status in associating themselves with the West. These are the people who are least likely to volunteer to fight. They're also a small minority of the population.

Wrong. My argument is that our nation would be better off if 100% of the money, materials, etc. were used domestically instead of wasting them over there.

Obviously not.

Czechia expects Ukraine to receive first batch of ammunition bought outside EU soon
European Pravda, Ukrainska Pravda — Friday, 1 March 2024, 22:43

The Czech initiative to procure 800,000 shells for Ukraine outside the EU, which is financed jointly by a number of states, will be able to make first deliveries to Kyiv in a few weeks.

Source: Jan Jires, the director general for defence policy and strategy of the Czech Republic, in an interview for Bloomberg, as reported by European Pravda

Details: Jires said that first supplies may be delivered to Ukraine in a few weeks. The delivery will be made within the framework of an initiative in which Czechia is a mediator for the governments willing to fund the procurement of 155-mm projectiles in third countries.

ISW Update

quote:

Key Takeaways:

Reported details of Russian-Ukrainian peace negotiations that occurred in Istanbul in April 2022 indicate that Russia has consistently envisioned a settlement for its illegal invasion of Ukraine wherein Ukraine would be unable to defend itself from a future Russian attack – an objective Russia continues to pursue under calls for Ukraine’s “demilitarization.”

Reported details of the draft treaty suggest that Russia intended to use the treaty to set conditions for future attacks against Ukraine while also prompting the West to make concessions on Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Russian authorities suggested that the Kremlin has likely adopted a more extensive set of goals regarding Ukraine over the course of Russia's war against Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared to disparage Russian elites in his February 29 Federal Assembly speech, more closely aligning himself with the veteran and military community and drawing praise from ultranationalist milbloggers.

Kremlin officials met with leaders of the pro-Russian Moldovan autonomous region Gagauzia and emphasized Russia’s support for Gagauzia against perceived Moldovan “oppression” on March 1.

Ukraine and the Netherlands signed a 10-year bilateral security agreement on March 1.

Russian forces made confirmed advances near Avdiivka and Donetsk City on March 1.

Russian authorities will likely use annual combat training for Russian reservists to support crypto-mobilization efforts.

DC doesn’t want a wall though, they don’t want a border. And their unwillingness to bend tells you that open borders are more important to them then Ukraine is.
