Exactly. No one cares that the Chinese and Russians have embassy security in Cuba. That's not a "military deployment." Claiming that consular security in Hong Kong represents a threat to China is a mark of idiotic propaganda.

Interesting Twitter thread from David Helms about what the area of the reservoir looked like 70 years ago and potential crossing places.
His conclusion:
His conclusion:

The lower basin road crossings [near Kachkarivka] have 7-8 km crossing distances with the main channel closest to the right bank (therefore less difficult to defend during water crossing) and closest to vital territories in the south ... lower basin crossings may be an interesting bridgehead opportunity for UAF to consider. When river bed will dry sufficiently to support military vehicles remains a question.

The US got upset because the Russians were putting Nukes in Cuba. Kennedy wasn’t going to let that happen.

It’s pretty funny how the goal post has shifted from “simply existing” to “retaking crimea” as the metric for Ukraine “winning”.
Ukraine already won because there is a 0.0% chance Russia annexes the country like they planned. Now Ukraine is going for punishment.

Oh, OK. How many US troops are deployed to Hong Kong?
Like the Ron Paul claims, likely USMC embassy/consulate guards are being called a military base.

TOW-2's and a lot of older equipment are still quite effective. The Gepard Antiaircraft system is very effective against Iranian drones and cruise missiles. It has a range of about 2.5 miles.

Gepard Antiaircraft Systems From Germany Target Iranian Drones Over Ukraine
quote:
The Flugabwehrkanonenpanzer Gepard ("anti-aircraft-gun tank 'Cheetah'", better known as the Flakpanzer Gepard) is an all-weather-capable German self-propelled anti-aircraft gun (SPAAG).[1] It was developed in the 1960s, fielded in the 1970s, and has been upgraded several times with the latest electronics. It has been a cornerstone of the air defence of the German Army (Bundeswehr) and a number of other NATO countries.
In Germany, the Gepard was phased out in late 2010 and replaced by the Wiesel 2 Ozelot Leichtes Flugabwehrsystem (LeFlaSys) with four FIM-92 Stinger or LFK NG missile launchers. A variant with the MANTIS gun system and LFK NG missiles, based on the GTK Boxer, was also considered.[2]

I wonder if there are old roads that were submerged when the dam was built? At least they wouldn't be mined and haven't much for traffic in 70 years.

As I understand it, nobody can join NATO while there is an active territorial conflict going on.

I don’t think it’s a written rule but it’s never happened in the past and the odds of Ukraine getting in while still in the middle of a war with Russia are virtually non existent

Open ground which artillery can pound like a mofo is the issue

It is not verboten but has never happened in the past. Turkey could well be the vote not to.

the MANTIS gun system
Those things are so badass. One MANTIS battery consists of 6 guns shooting 35mm airburst rounds and 1000 rounds/min each. They have started using "programmable" rounds they've developed that uses electromagnets in the muzzle to set the fuse with data from the radar and tracking systems to create basically a screen of tungsten balls in the air that even the smallest drones aren't getting through.
It's basically the next gen version of the US Navy's Phalanx CIWS with a bigger gun.

There was a previous dam built in the 1930's which was blown to stop the German advance so the roads at best would have been dirt roads

I'm quite surprised that Ukraine does not have any Phalanx systems installed at least that I know of. They are quite effective against small munitions and missiles. Could even keep it mobile so it's not a fixed target.

As far as I know the land based Phalanx systems are pretty rare so that is probably the main reason. Last I saw, there were like 20-25 in existence as the vast majority are aboard Navy vessels. The land based "Centurion" was developed to protect HVTs like Bagram Air Base and parts of Baghdad.
German Gepard and Swedish Bofors are way cheaper too. They aren't going to take out something like a rocket or mortar like a MANTIS or Phalanx can, but they can certainly shoot down Iranian drones effectively.

ISW can be such crap sometimes. They just put out their daily report and mention that Rybar has claimed that Russia retook the village of Pyatykhatky.
Of course, that was Rybar's report from 11:30 PM last night, and since then, it has become clear that Russia's counterattack to retake the village has failed and Ukraine has kept control of it.
What's the use of daily update if they put out info that has been known to be incorrect for over 10 hours?

ISW has been very conservative reporting any Ukrainian progress. Sometimes 3 days late
