There was never any attempt to join NATO pre Feb 24th. The goal was to join the EU which would have severely lessened Russian oligarch dominance of the Ukrainian economy.

Polling showed that Ukrainians didn't want to join NATO until AFTER Feb 24th last year, now they overwhelmingly support joining even ethnic Russians.

Well Sack of _____ is just that

Ukraine joining NATO has been in the works since at least 2008.

quote:

At the June 2021 Brussels summit, NATO leaders reiterated the decision taken at the 2008 Bucharest summit that Ukraine would eventually become a NATO member with the MAP as an integral part of the process, and Ukraine's right to determine its future and foreign policy without outside interference.[11] NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also stressed that Russia will not be able to veto Ukraine's accession to NATO "as we will not return to the era of spheres of interest, when large countries decide what smaller ones should do."[12] Before further actions on NATO membership were taken, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022.

Here's the TL;DR for why this war is even happening:

Guess they should have e done a better job running the Soviet Union and not let it collapse. Then there wouldn't be NATO countries on Russia's doorstep.

NATO's entire reason for existing dissolved when the Soviet Union did. Why is it even still a thing?

We provoked it, by choice. None of the agreements we make are worth the paper they're printed on and the whole world knows that now. Well done I suppose.

How much do you get paid to troll for Russia?

Because they can. I've noticed there hasn't been any wars on the lands of NATO nations since they decided to all get together and say "if anyone fricks with one of us, they frick with all of us."

Plus, the world doesn't bow to the whims of Russia. Russia doesn't like NATO? Oh well...

That'd be like us invading Cuba and saying Russia provoked us...

Oh that's rich. How many wars have NATO countries started on other countries' lands? Too many to count.

Amazing that people extract this narrative from that.

Scandinavian countries are afraid of additional Russian encroachment. Eastern European countries are afraid of being subjugated by a pseudo Soviet state that doesn't respect their territorial integrity or their culture.

Because that's what Russian military interventions have forced in Georgia, Chechnya, and Ukraine. There would arguably be no need for NATO except for the steady military expansions from Russia to regain former Soviet states.

None of this excuses poor decisions by the United States to adventure abroad into theaters like Iraq. On the contrary it should have taught both the United States and Russia to avoid military conflict where possible.

Did you see in the news this morning that China wants to build a base in Cuba now? You're OK with that? I can't wait to be told how that's (D)ifferent though.

If not for NATO. Russia would have already moved into Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia. Has Ukraine been in NATO in 2014 Russia would not have invaded

That map shows us having a base in Hong Kong. Do we have a base in Hong Kong?

It also shows us having an active base in Indonesia

edit: ah, I see; this map was circulated by about 10 or so twitter accounts that blasted this around early February when the Chinese spy balloon thing was going on.

Now post a map where NATO has their nukes.

ETA: Just because a country is in NATO doesn’t mean it has nukes. Nukes are in Germany, but not Poland for instance. Italy has nukes, but not Hungary.
