It gives them more aircraft to patrol the sky and a better of a better quality with better radars and avionics to combat more modern Russian 4th gen fighters. They wouldn’t change the tide of the war alone but their presence alone would be something that Russia has to account for that they didn’t have to previously with Ukraine’s older Mig-29s. The goal would be to slowly keep converting Ukraine to western/NATO systems and tactics. The f-16 is not a large fighter by any means, especially when it sits next to a Su-27 heavy fighter but it can also hold it’s own in ways the older Migs can’t. Again, they wouldn’t be a war winner, but they would mark a big leap forward in Ukraine’s air to air capability.

In what ways will it change the current state of things? What will it allow them to do that they are incapable of doing atm? I’ve been wondering about this.

The biggest difference is that they will have fire-and-forget missiles to keep Russian jets further from the front lines. And they will be able to help shoot down missiles and drones.

But the main reason that Ukraine needs F-16s is that their own planes simply can't be maintained forever with the flight hours that Ukraine is putting on them. They will fall out of the sky.

Anyone got that graphic that showed the composition of the 9 brigades Ukraine was forming, I don't remember seeing this included.

This is the graphic I was referring to in this post.

The brigade discussed in this article does not appear in the graphic below that shows the 9 brigades Ukraine has created ahead of the offensive

BRRRRRR is excellent use of decades old seismic technology. I wonder how far away this effectively sets off mines, mostly anti personnel mines.
50 years ago it was dynamite to create the shockwaves to bounce on geological strata see what was down there.

The city itself has always been of no real consequence. Taking the high ground surrounding that valley town is consequential, and encirclement a major defeat suffered by Russia.

British Defence Intelligence
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 19 May 2023

On 18 May 2023, a train derailed near Simferopol, blocking the only rail line into the port of Sevastopol, the base of Russia's Black Sea Fleet (BSF). The railway authorities said it was a result of "interference by outsiders."

Russia will move to repair the line quickly, but the incident will disrupt deliveries of supplies and potentially also weaponry, such as Kalibr cruise missiles, to the BSF.

Any sabotage in this sensitive area will further increase the Kremlin's concerns about its ability to protect other key infrastructure in Crimea. The peninsula retains a vital psychological and logistical role in enabling Russia's war in Ukraine.

Just to be clear they don't detonate the mines they are just used to detect buried mines. Very cool use of O&G tech.

Russia able to produce 67 missiles monthly – Ukraine's Defence Intelligence
Iryna Balachuk — Friday, 19 May 2023, 13:09

Russia has depleted a major stockpile of missile weapons but has managed to establish production, as evidenced by the wreckage of the shot-down missiles, said Vadym Skibitskyi, Deputy Chief of the Ukrainian Defence Intelligence.

Source: Skibitskyi in a comment to Ukrainian news agency RBC-Ukraine

Quote from Skibitskyi: "They [Russians] bring Kalibrs to occupied Crimea at least twice a month. Russia is currently able to produce monthly about 25 Kalibrs [cruise missiles], 35 pieces of Kh-101s [cruise missiles], two pieces of Kinzhals [hypersonic ballistic missiles], and five pieces of 9M723 ballistic missiles for the Iskander-M [short-range ballistic missile system]. Therefore, they manage to import components for producing missile weapons despite international sanctions."

Details: Skibitskyi stated that the wreckage of the Russian missiles shot down in Ukraine indicates that these weapons have just come off the assembly line, as these munitions were manufactured in the first quarter of 2023.

So Russia used up 3 months worth of Kinzhal missiles just to slightly damage 1 part of a Patriot battery?

If you listen to the Tankies Russia destroyed all the Patriots in Ukraine and half of the ones in the US.

Which the Ukrainians were able to repair with duct tape while they waited for the part to arrive.

That's one of the two Patriot batteries in Ukraine. The other one has been busy this week shooting down two Russian jets and two helicopters.

This was a very interesting commentary in yesterday's WSJ:

quote:

The U.K. and the U.S. are great allies, but on Ukraine there’s a disagreement brewing. The Brits would like the Americans to be more aggressive, and the U.S. wants the U.K. to be more cautious.

The disagreement revolves mainly around weaponry. The U.K. last week announced it will send Storm Shadow cruise missiles to Ukraine, and it has provided thousands of man-portable antitank systems to Kyiv. The U.K. has also provided boutique electronic warfare and intelligence support to Ukraine. Yet although British support pales in comparison with the weapons and financial aid provided by the U.S., the U.K has shown a sustained willingness to send its best weapons to Ukraine.

It isn’t only weapons; it’s people too. U.K. special forces from the British Army’s SAS and SRR regiments and the Navy’s SBS units are operating very close to the front lines. These personnel are serving as key interlocutors between North Atlantic Treaty Organization intelligence efforts and Ukrainian forces. They aren’t fighting, but their guiding influence on Ukrainian special-forces activity is evident in the sabotage operations Ukraine has conducted against Russian railway, airfield, fuel and other logistical nodes. The British army is also regarded by the Ukrainian military command as its most reliable advisory partner.
quote:

Always behind the scenes, Britain, Poland and the Baltic states have lamented what they regard as the Biden administration’s lethargy in supplying Kyiv with the advanced weapons it requests. American caution is evident in other areas. When a Russian jet fighter fired on a British spy plane over the Black Sea in September 2022, the U.K. responded by deploying its own jet fighters to escort future spy flights. In contrast, when Russian jet fighters downed a U.S. drone over the Black Sea this March, the Biden administration ordered future drone flights to steer clear of the battlefield.

Coordination on Ukraine between Washington and London remains unparalleled in the West. But for London, the risk of provoking the Kremlin is viewed as less important than the reward of enabling Ukraine’s victory.

There is unconfirmed information that ????Italy secretly transferred a batch of B1 Centauro tank destroyers to Ukraine

The Centauro B1 is armed with a stabilized 105mm high-velocity rifled gun designed by OTO Melara. The effective firing range is 3,000 m.

Italy is one of the nations that usually doesn't say what it's giving to Ukraine, but Zelensky just visited and was promised "stuff," so this would not be surprising in the least.

I've seen these things when they do road work around here. I couldn't figure out what they were doing but it makes sense they may be been trying to verify what was under the area they were getting ready to dig up.

Pathetic. This gang of incompetent fools is not good at anything. Worthless. Maybe the Brits, Poles and Baltic States can ship the Biden Administration a set of balls.

The only way to end this war is to give Ukraine what it needs to achieve it's goals. Russia must be defeated, They are never going to quit until they are forced to. These weapons should have been there months ago. By delaying only prolongs the fight and more people are killed. I have said for months that this administration does not want to see a total Ukrainian victory. You want to end the war? Send Ukraine what it needs for achieving it's goals. What is the sense in sending the billions that we have if you are not willing to send what is needed for victory?
