On a scale of virtue signaling to game changing, where do you slot in the couple dozen HIMARs we gave Ukraine.
A three out of 10. They are not doing anything but prolonging the conflict. They would need many many more to actually push the Russians out.

If I may channel my inner OMLandshark for just a second, that is quite the setting for leaders to convene and commit ever more weapons for a war against the largest collection of questionably functional nuclear weapons in the world.
Following this Logic - should the rest of the world take a stand against aggression, or no?
Otherwise, just declare today that Russia should be allowed to take over any lands they wish, because they individually have more nukes?

Ukraine doesn't have a meaningful number of trained fighter pilots. There will absolutely be "volunteers" in some of these cockpits if Poland actually ends up turning their F16s over.
Just paint some shark teeth on the noses and turn 'em loose.

A long, detailed read on the current state of Russian tactics and how they have been successfully adapting to Western weapon systems.

Over a year ago when I asked a friend who is a retired squadron commander of A-10's, he said that likely 50+ experienced pilots would go to Ukraine to fly them, so that wasn't the issue with their being a non starter for use in Ukraine.

Now I know how little you’re actually paying attention to the reality on the ground.

Oh sure. My inner OML doesn’t make that leap, probably because there is no logic there to follow.
It’s just an observation that Hiroshima makes an interesting location for a dialogue that is fundamentally asking “how do we successfully end this war?”
Every decision to date made by the west in this conflict has weighed Hiroshima, at least to some degree.

I don't know if this was posted, but a very interesting little interview with former MI6 boss Richard Dearlove. LINK

More confirmation of a new (unreported) armored brigade that has already deployed to Ukraine after training and equipping. That makes at least 10 new Brigades. Since this is a previously unknown brigade, I wonder how many more there are.
Every day now we seem to be hearing of new systems/capabilities showing up on the battlefield for Ukraine.

What a beautiful day today! Just pinned my middle son to CPT at Ft Sill, OK (the Artillery Center For Excellence). He is deployed with the 101 to Poland (he is Romania) but attending a fire control course here at Sill. Got to spend two weeks with him!
Man, you would not believe the number of Ukrainian soldiers here attending schools, from the basic artillery course to the senior artillery staff courses.
They love the PX.

I watched it last night, some of his remarks were not surprising.
It is also not surprising that the clueless politards love the Obama policy for Ukraine

Oh, gotcha. Yeah, Hiroshima seems like an interesting spot to discuss.
My understanding is that the US has been more wary of being blamed for a completely destroyed Putin because he could be that desperate.
France wants Putin to be able to have an off ramp and save face so nukes aren’t discussed.
The UK and Poland are all for crushing his army now or force his retreat, probably because they know all too well how appeasement doesn’t work.
Who knows what the Germans want.

How is Russia going to counter all of these new Ukrainian combat units??? Ukraine has at least 10 new Armored Brigades equipped with modern tanks, IFV's, and Artillery. All of these units are highly mobile and trained in combined arms warfare.
Russia is going to get steamrolled.
Even if Russia were to initiate another mobilization today, what are they going to equip the troops with? They struggled with that in the last mobilization, the next one will be worse. I guess they can pull some T34s and Mosins out of storage.

Its not just the equipment its the training. I knew there would be some Ukrainians at Sill but there are hundreds there if not more. And remember, there is training going on in the UK, Poland, Germany, and other western countries.
I'm going to Bragg in 6 weeks and I expect I'll see the same.

Mad Max grows closer by the day. 70 Year old equipment, Russia's desperation becomes more visible daily.

This brigade equipped by Sweden is a very powerful force.
Those CV90 IFVs are bad arse, some versions fire programable ammo where the gunner can choose what he needs based on the target.
From the BAE marketing brochure
The CV90's Armor is rumored to be able to defend against 30mm AP Sabot rounds used by the Russians.
The Archer artillery system is one the best systems in the world.
Combined together into one unit, that's a can of whoop arse. I hope Ukraine uses it effectively, Lots of warfighting strategies will be validated or discarded based on the results delivered by these units.

quote:
The 6-mode programmable 40 and 57 mm Bofors 3P (Pre-fragmented, Programmable, Proximity- fused) ammunition can be programmed in six different function modes to provide optimised effect against any aerial, surface or shore target. This provides weapon systems with the highest possible combat flexibility.
Each 3P fuse is automatically and individually programmed by a Proximity Fuse Programmer which continuously receives data from the Fire Control Computer System. Immediately before firing, the fuse is programmed to the selected mode.
It gives forces superior handling of traditional threats such as anti-ship missiles, aircraft, ships and shore targets, including those with armour protection. It also provides completely new capabilities. Functions such as airburst deal with threats that previously were impossible to engage, such as small, fast-manoeuvring boats and concealed targets.
The CV90's Armor is rumored to be able to defend against 30mm AP Sabot rounds used by the Russians.
The Archer artillery system is one the best systems in the world.
quote:
The Archer is a further development of the FH 77B 155 mm field howitzer. It has a longer 52 caliber gun for longer ranges. The Archer is fitted with a rapid automatic ammunition loading system. Maximum range of fire is 30 km with ordinary High Explosive (HE) projectile and 40 km with rocket-assisted HE projectile. The Archer also fires Excalibur extended range precision guided projectiles with a maximum range of 60 km. It is also compatible with Bonus precision guided projectiles. The Bonus has a range of 34 km and carries two smart anti-tank submunitions.
Maximum rate of fire is 8-9 rounds per minute. The Archer is capable of Multiple-Round Simultaneous Impact (MRSI) firing. It launches up to 6 shells in 30 seconds, each in different trajectories, so that all of the shells arrive on target at the same time. This self-propelled howitzer has onboard ammunition supply of 20 rounds.
It takes only 30 seconds to stop and prepare for firing. Out of action time is also as short as 30 seconds. The FH 77 series field howitzers are emplaced within around 10 minutes. So it was a huge improvement. Brief redeployment time allows to avoid counter-battery fire.
There is also a LEMUR remotely-controlled weapon station, armed with a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun for self-defense and smoke grenade dischargers.
The Archer has a crew of 4, including driver, commander and 2 operators. In case of emergency this artillery system can be operated by a crew of only 2 men (driver and one operator). The Archer artillery system is operated remotely from the cab.
Cab and ordnance of the Archer is protected against 7.62 mm armor-piercing rounds and artillery shell fragments. It is fitted with an automatic fire suppression system. Though, only vital parts of the artillery system are protected. Cab is fitted with NBC protection system. It also withstands mine blasts equivalent to 6 kg of TNT.
The Archer artillery system is mounted on a commercially available Volvo A30D 6x6 articulated hauler chassis. Vehicle is has a run flat system and can move with all wheels puncutred. The Archer can be airlifted by an Airbus A400M or similar military transport aircraft.
The Archer is reloaded by an associated ammunition resupply vehicle. Each self-propelled artillery system is assigned with one resupply vehicle. Reloading takes up to 8 minutes. If required, the Archer can be reloaded by resupply personnel alone. Each Archer battery is also assigned with one support (maintenance) vehicle. It conducts refueling and simple maintenance.
In 2019 a new version of the Archer, based on a MAN HX2 series truck with 8x8 configuration was revealed. Interestingly, Sweden ordered a numbed of MAN HX2 series tactical military trucks in 2014 with deliveries commencing in 2017.
A version of the Archer was proposed for the US Army new MH155 program, based on the HEMTT high mobility vehicle with 8x8 configuration.
