In Germany, it is the infantry made up literally of gamekeepers. Jager just like the master of the hunt digestif.
Ok. I’m very familiar with Jager units. Which “Jager” translates to “hunter”. I’ve just never heard a Jager unit being referred to as “gamekeepers”.

I’ve studied warfare for over 40 years. What the hell is a “gamekeeper” brigade?
LRRP, Ranger, that sort of thing. Denmark has a Jaegerkorps that performs those functions.

What would "light infantry" consist of for the Russians?
To clarify, this is a Russian source worried about all the new brigades that Ukraine is putting together for its offensive.

Neither have I. I just knew the original Hessian Jager units were made up of gamekeepers and were sorta specialized lt. infantry used for scouting, sniping, etc.

Yes, as I said, I’m quite familiar with Jager units. I’ve just never heard of them being called “gamekeepers”. I guess, as someone else said, the description of “gamekeepers” was a bad translation from Russian as “Jager” translates literally to “hunter”.

A new video from Prigozhin today, from @wartranslated. It's very odd, but all of Prigozhin's videos seem very odd. He's back to whining about a lack of shells and support again.
Bizarre.
Assuming the translation is accurate, with the current way the situation is looking on the ground it makes little sense, especially following the other most recent video. I can only assume it is a further attempt to promote Wagner's role as the only one getting things done.
Of course if Wagner really is the lynch pin for the entire Russian front line I would have no objection with them pulling out.

Russian forces appear to have secured a sufficient positional advantage to conduct a turning movement against certain parts of Bakhmut but have not yet forced Ukrainian forces to withdraw and will likely not be able to encircle the city soon. Russian forces made one limited confirmed advance near Bakhmut on March 4.
Russian advances in Bakhmut have been slow and gradual and do not suggest that Russian forces will be able to encircle Bakhmut soon, much less that they will be able to take the city by frontal assaults. The Russians have, rather, managed to push close enough to critical ground lines of communication from the northeast to threaten Ukrainian withdrawal routes in a classical turning movement. The purpose of a turning movement is to force the enemy to abandon prepared defensive positions and is different from the aim of an encirclement, which is to trap and destroy enemy forces. The Russians may have intended to encircle Ukrainian forces in Bakhmut, but the Ukrainian command has signaled that it will likely withdraw rather than risk an encirclement.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu met with Eastern Military District (EMD) Commander Colonel General Rustam Muradov in western Donetsk Oblast, likely to assess the extent of Russian losses around Vuhledar and the possibility of further offensives in this direction. The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) published a video on March 4 purporting to show Shoigu visiting Muradov in an unspecified area of western Donetsk Oblast and claimed that Muradov delivered a report on the current situation and actions of Russian forces in his area of responsibility.

The Chinese government is reportedly displeased with the Kremlin over the publicization of arms sales discussions. The Economist reported on March 2 that an unspecified European official claimed that the Chinese government wanted discussions of lethal aid to remain secret so that China could maintain its image as a neutral mediator.[9] CNBC reported on March 3 that US officials have indicated that information regarding Chinese considerations to send Russia arms was an assessment ”gleaned” from Russian officials

Russian State Duma Defense Committee Head Andrey Kartapalov stated that Russian companies should purchase their own air defense systems to defend against drones. A Russian state-owned news source reported that Kartapalov claimed on March 1 that Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) resources are focused on protecting critical state and military facilities. He argued that every “self-respecting corporation” should be able to purchase and install such systems for themselves.

The Wagner Group reportedly opened at least three new recruitment centers at Russian sports clubs between March 2 and 4, possibly to augment Wagner’s recruitment base after losing access to prisoner recruits. The Wagner Group reportedly opened at least three new recruiting centers collocated with Russian sporting clubs since Wagner Group financier Yevgeny Prigozhin officially announced that Wagner launched recruiting efforts through Russian sports club on March 2.[12] The new Wagner recruiting centers are reportedly based at the “Dynamo” sports facility in Samara, the “Antares” Sports Club in Rostov, and the Russian Boxing Federation building in Tyumen

UPDATE ON UKRAINE 5 March 2023
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
In late February 2023, Russian mobilised reservists described being ordered to assault a Ukrainian concrete strong point armed with only 'firearms and shovels'. The 'shovels' are likely entrenching tools being employed for hand-to-hand combat.
The lethality of the standard-issue MPL-50 entrenching tool is particularly mythologised in Russia. Little changed since it was designed in 1869, its continued use as a weapon highlights the brutal and low-tech fighting which has come to characterise much of the war. One of the reservists described being 'neither physically nor psychologically' prepared for the action.
Recent evidence suggests an increase in close combat in Ukraine. This is probably a result of the Russian command continuing to insist on offensive action largely consisting of dismounted infantry, with less support from artillery fire because Russia is short of munitions.

After reading some reports and seeing how the situation stands, I now think that Ukraine might end up holding the center of Bakhmut for another week.
I don't know, of course -- they might abandon the city today. But I think that they have defensible positions and can impose a very high cost on Russian attempts to finish the capture of those ruins, so my guess is that they will try to do that for a while longer.

Don't know if this was mentioned but:
The Russian BM-21 "Grad" 122 mm rocket salvo fire system was destroyed by counter-battery fire of the Ukrainian troops in the Zaporizhzhia region

I’m sure a lot of Grads get blown up. They are low tech, cheap and really haven’t changed much from the original Katyusha rockets (Stalin’s organ” the Russians used in WW2. They don’t have a long range so they have to be relatively close to the front lines. The Russians have hundreds or maybe a couple thousand of them. Ukraine has them too but they are very short of rockets for them.

pfe say 1980's US mobile arms had lead primary to reduce radar signature. Crew carried lead paint sticks to touch up any scratches. What has replaced that?
