ISW assesses that Ukraine remaining in Bakhmut is "strategically sound."
quote:
ISW has previously assessed that the Ukrainian defense of Bakhmut is a strategically sound operation to force Russian forces to extend manpower and equipment on costly assaults to capture a city of limited operational importance.[58] Ukrainian forces have already achieved this strategic aim, and the continued Ukrainian defense of the city will remain strategically sound as long as the costs of holding the city do not outweigh the continued impacts on Russian manpower and equipment. Ukrainian officials continue to emphasize that Ukrainian forces have the option to conduct a controlled withdrawal from Bakhmut if they see fit.[59]

That or he’s really been living high on the hog hitting the bottle hard. Alcohol can cause that redness in his face but as for the 100 or more lbs he’s put on who knows? I actually get and understand risking the high casualties to hold Bakhmut if it’s for a legitimate reason. If they really believe this will hold up the entire Russian offensive then you do what you have to do. But in the meantime I’m also realizing the end has all but been determined by now. Essential equipment needs to be either evacuated now or pulled back so that it can be done quickly. This is everything from tanks to JAVELINS/NLAWs/Stugna-p. For this reason I don’t see them holding more than another week and that’s ok because as soon as you pull out and they come forward into the town the Ukrainians need to make it rain artillery and heavy mortar fire.

The story of Johnny as told on Twitter and backed up by Malcolm Nance who apparently was the Marcus that Johnny was referring to with the "red phone" to the CIA. It is at once too crazy to be true and too crazy not to be true. Offered for entertainment purposes only...
I am posting the whole thread as it is nuts and I want the non-Twitter users to be able to easily see it. I have no idea if it is true but I have fewer grains of salt with it than with lil Johnny communist Antifa.

I just came across this list of confirmed kills by Russian Loitering Munitions written by Oryx back in late November 22.
All of these kills are confirmed with photographic or video evidence.
From an overall perspective, total losses for each system would be higher as this listing only includes hits by the Russian Lancet and Kub loitering drone systems.
Of interest, Ukraine has lost 15 M777's and 7 M109's to loitering munition strikes.

The use of Iranian-designed loitering munitions by Russia has received a large share of international media attention. Though they are a menace to Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, Russia has so far largely refrained from using them against Ukrainian military targets. A more serious development to Ukraine's Armed Forces comes in the form of the indigenously-designed Kub and Lancet-3(M) loitering munitions that Russia has increasingly been deploying to strike Ukrainian artillery, radars and surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems out of reach from Russia's ground-based assets.
The increasing use of loitering munitions comes as Russia's fleet of attack helicopters has suffered extensive losses. [1] The situation is hardly better with the country's inventory of UCAVs, with heavy losses only prevented by a dearth of UCAVs in the first place. [2] Rather than purchasing additional Iranian loitering munition types to make up for this lack of aerial fire support, Russia has sought to massively expand the production of an improved version of the Lancet-3 (referred to as the Lancet-3M in this article), which was already tested in Syria in 2020. [3] These have seen increasing use since October 2022, although the less effective Kub loitering munition continues to see use as well.

If these photos are accurate, this level of swelling may be a side effect of using Prednisone. This is a corticosteroid commonly used for kidney disease, which ties into the rumor that a Western nephrologist was flown into Chechnya to examine him.
Following well established dictator's practice, we can look for a dialysis machine to be flown into Grozny soon. Breaks my heart.

(Unfortunately in this case) you can live quite a long time on dialysis, but it means letting more people into the loop with the opportunity to kill you by commission or omission. Not a good predicament for a guy with a lot of enemies to be in.

Do you think that he means drive Russia completely out of Ukraine when he says they must "prevail in the war"?

British Defence Intelligence
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 03 March 2023
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
Despite the war in Ukraine, Russian defence companies continue to showcase their products at major international arms fairs.
The Arena-E active protection system (APS), designed to improve the survivability of armoured vehicles, was displayed at a recent event. Its promotional literature states that it 'defeats the threats that are most dangerous for armoured vehicles...if you value your armour and crews you need Arena-E'.
There has been no evidence of Arena-E systems being installed on Russia's own vehicles in Ukraine, where it has lost over 5,000 armoured vehicles. This is likely due to Russian industry's inability to manufacture high-tech systems at scale; a problem which is exacerbated by the effect of international sanctions.

Looks like the Ukrainians are withdrawing from Bakhmut. They are destroying bridges this morning.

ZURICH/BERLIN, March 3 (Reuters) - Germany has asked Switzerland to sell it some of its mothballed Leopard 2 tanks, the Swiss and German governments said on Friday, in a deal that could allow Western countries to increase military aid to Ukraine.
Germany wants Switzerland to sell some of the tanks back to arms maker Rheinmetall (RHMG.DE), which would allow the company to backfill gaps in the armaments of European Union and NATO members.
quote:
"The tanks will not be sold on to Ukraine. We guarantee that they will remain in Germany or with our partners in NATO and the EU, to plug gaps that have emerged through the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks and to improve the supply with spare parts in general," the letter said.
This could definitely help more tanks to go to Ukraine.
Edit: Note that Austria has 56 Leopards that it is likewise not using. There's definitely the opportunity for our European partners to get more tanks to Ukraine, if there's the political will.

The US is conducting war games for Ukrainian commanders – NYT
The United States is helping to train and prepare the Ukrainian military to resist the Russian invasion.
The New York Times reports that this week the U.S. Army Europe and Africa Command hosted a Ukrainian military delegation at its headquarters in Germany.
The US military together with the Ukrainian military conducted the so-called war games: they simulated the possible course of hostilities between the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Russian invaders in the spring of this year.
The maneuvers were attended by high-ranking generals of the US army responsible for supporting Ukraine.
During the military exercises, a number of options for a counteroffensive of the Ukrainian Defense Forces to liberate the temporarily captured territory from the Russian invaders were worked out.
The training was conducted to work out various strategies of Ukrainian actions, taking into account all risks and various steps.

Ukraine has been very fortunate that Russia has been unable to produce Lancets in greater quantity, as that's been a very deadly system.
This is also why some M777 crews now have a chain-link fence around their equipment -- to catch a Lancet before it hits.

Cheap Australian drones made of cardboard and rubber bands are helping Ukrainian troops fight off Russian invaders, as part of a $33m commitment to supply the country with an array of unmanned systems.
![]()
At least 100 of the flat-packed drones are being supplied to Ukraine each month, allowing President Volodymyr Zelensky’s forces to drop bombs, deliver supplies and undertake vital reconnaissance missions.
The Australian army is yet to purchase any of the catapult-launched aircraft for its own use, in a story familiar to many local defence sector innovators. The unmanned aerial vehicles, made by Melbourne-based Sypaq, are designed to be expendable on the battlefield, but some in Ukraine have undertaken 60 flights.
The Precision Payload Delivery System drones are constructed from thick, wax-coated cardboard and heavy-duty rubber bands that secure the wings. They are controlled by a military-grade guidance system that requires no user input once the aircraft is launched.
At somewhere between $1000 and $5000 each – the exact cost is classified – they can be used to overwhelm opposing forces in a contest of attrition, forcing the enemy to use more expensive hardware to take them out.
quote:
Mr Myroshnychenko said the appearance of the drone was deceptive, and they were already being used by Ukrainian soldiers for a variety of missions, including lethal ones.
“When you look at it, it looks like something that kids would play with,” the ambassador said. “But when you see what it can do it’s really amazing.
“From what I hear they have been very good at inflicting lots of damage on the enemy.
