UPDATE ON UKRAINE
27 January 2023

Over the last six days, Russian online commentators have claimed Russian forces have made significant advances, breaking through Ukrainian defences in two areas: in Zaporizhzhia Oblast near Orikiv, and 100km to the east in Donetsk Oblast, near Vuhledar.

Russian units have probably conducted local, probing attacks near Orikiv and Vuhledar, but it is highly unlikely that Russia has actually achieved any substantive advances.

There is a realistic possibility that Russian military sources are deliberately spreading misinformation in an effort to imply that the Russian operation is
sustaining momentum.

I meant to ask you about your tanker friend. You said he was a colonel in their army is his unit one of the ones that tagged to transition to Leopards or have you been able to speak with him?

I’m not sure. The only thing he has said about it is that he hopes he is but he doubts it since his new unit is made up of reserves and modernized T72s from Poland. The T72 is like sitting inside a powder keg with its ammo stored around the turret. His T64 was the same but he said that it atleast had a comfortable seat. The T72 is uncomfortable by Soviet standards and that is saying something.

That is what we meant by saying that Ukraine was getting the export version. It’s also has less advanced optics and computer stuff but it’s still way better than the Russians have.

Kinda shocked them and Sweden arent chomping at the bit to make this happen considering how badly the F35 has dominated export sales over the Gripen and Rafale

It’s not really surprising. Sweden is not in NATO yet and they are close to Russia. They are not going to consider giving up any of the fighters in their arsenal until they are formally in NATO.

Because we have never used the Abrams in any conflict to test them out...

NATO MBTs have never gone up against T90s or modernized T72s. They have also not gone against enemy tanks in any major battle since 1991. They went up against the export version of the T72 in Iraq but the modernized T72s and T90s have APS systems, improved armor, and improved fire control. They have also never gone up against Russia’s professional tankers. Since China’s Type 99 and Type 96 are similar to the T90 and China’s tactics are similar to Russia’s and Ukraine is being trained by the west this will allow us to evaluate our equipment and tactics vs the best equipment operated by the best trained tankers of any potential opponent that we are likely to face in the future.

AWACS

They have to suppress the Russians SAMs first. Since Russia can cover the air from SAMs located in Crimea or Russia that is going to be a challenge. It’s not insurmountable but Ukraine is going to need more HAARM capable air craft and more pilots trained in wild weasel missions to do it. Ukraine’s helicopters have been doing well because they can fly below radar coverage more easily than jets. They need more helicopters and we have hundreds of recently retired USMC super cobras sitting in the boneyard and I can’t believe that we have not offered them to the Ukies.

A10s can survive MANPADs and AAA but they can’t survive a direct hit by a S300 missile or a Buk missile.

On Twitter, I am seeing a fair amount of discussion about the UK's 30 Eurofighter Typhoons from Tranche 1. The UK is planning to retire these planes by 2025, according to Jane's, even though they have over half of their airframe hours remaining.

The Eurofighter would be a better choice for Ukraine than F16s. It has two engines and a sturdier landing gear than the F16. Plus it gives the USA a chance to sell the RAF some F35s.

i remember seeing the photos of A-10s returning from a combat mission in Gulf War 1 where they were all shot up, and missing parts of tail or wing.

they were built to have redundant controls and take a licking. they can survive AAA and smaller anti-air weapons

there are a much better close air support platform then the russian made jets they are currently using. but without air superiority they would still lose a lot. need more anti radar/anti sam weapons to take control of the battle field first.

The A2 is a much better tank than the A1. Like night and day better.

1. CITV--Commander's Independent Thermal Viewer. The tank commander can be scanning while the gunner is pulling triggers. The TC can designate a target to the gunner and immediately swing the gun tube to whatever the TC is looking at.

2. Much easier for the gunner to track targets. In any Abrams, as soon as the gunner hits the laser button, it automatically calculates the ballistic solution to hit whatever was lased at. On a moving target with an A2, you just continue to track and pull triggers. On an A1, the reticle will jump off of the target and you bringing the reticle back to center of mass is what induces the lead.

The biggest thing that is a "downside" is that because off all of the computer components in the turret, an A2 must run with the NBC over-pressurization system to cool them. That means the tank has to run at Tactical Idle. Much higher RPMs which means more fuel. Also, it's harder for the driver to get you nice stops for a perfect firing platform for the gunner.

More on the A2..

The GPS (gunner's primary sight) can go 3x (for scanning), 12x (engaging) and 25x for IDing. On the A1, it's just 3x and 10x.

Also, the gunner has a secondary sight which shows the same picture as the GPS, but it's off to the side left, so you don't have to always have your face smashed up to the GPS if you are "leisurely" scanning.

That was against goat humpers and were going to be on their way out due designed to attack Soviet tanks in Germany. Yes designed to handle small arms fire but not a SAM. Design was to get to the battlefield and kill Russian tanks and maybe get home. Cold War era was all about the Fulda Gap in Germany, and why the portable Davy Crockett tactical nuke was invented. Just enough nuke power to wipe out what was flowing through the gap.

This is an article in The Daily Beast but it is by Julia Davis the main US bringer of Russian State TV to YT and Twitter and it has little editorial content.

Russian tankers have had enough of their infantry and decide to give them a wake-up call. Either that or they were trying to get them to play El Segundo's barrel-riding game.

Twitter

In an effort to prevent the above shenanigans, Russia is rolling out the new short-barreled version of their tanks. Maybe the tank is actually trans and this is post-gender reasignment surgery.

Jesus. I've seen stuff like that happen several times, especially on the A1.

The gunner is scanning, doing his thing. The TC then starts moving the tank around...it's easy to get out of whack with your gun tube orientation with respect to the hull.

Going back to the A1 and A2 differences, the A2 has a little icon the gunner can quickly look at to reference the gun tube orientation.

On the A1, the only way is to have an experienced gunner that can quickly look at the turret screens and identify "landmarks" such as the driver's compartment or auxiliary hydraulic pump in the subturret to determine if you're gun tube is looking down range or just out there flapping.

When the gunner has the controls pressed ( we call them Cadillac because they're made by Cadillac Gage Company), the turretand gun tube is stabilized so if the driver is doing crazy shite, the gunner needs to be situationally aware and let go of the Cadillacs.
