I think COVID also hit Russia a bit harder than was let on outside of it.
This might well be true but armies are less affected mentally by something like COVID. While you can figure there will be numbers rendered combat ineffective for some period of time the percentages will probably be similar to the other army and on the mental side a soldier will be giving more thought to getting shot in the face or cooked inside a tank than a virus.
In the case of Ukraine where much of the resistance could come from the civilian population, COVID would have likely had a far more dramatic mental impact. That plus the rest of the world being caught up in COVID still leads me to think mid-2020 would have been a much better time to move on Ukraine with the cover and concealment of the height of COVID.
Being an armchair General with the benefit of hindsight is fairly easy.

The Kool Aid drinkers think the Russians are surrendering in droves and the Ukrainian president is a literal Jedi knight killing the Russians in the battlefield

Doge @IntelDoge · 13m Advisor to the Head of the Office of the Ukrainian President says #Russia has completely halted an advance towards #Kyiv in some directions, and some of its units are withdrawing. Doge @IntelDoge · 8m I'm hoping I'm wrong but I don't think this is a good thing. Doge @IntelDoge · 8m It **could** mean that the Russians are preparing for an intensive bombing campaign and want to get their troops out of the area prior to that. I'm hoping that isn't the case.

Have you read a post in this thread?

Which goes back to my theory that we are looking at either a street to street slog, or flattening Kiev.

In a 2-1 vote today (with me holding the tiebreaker between our two dogs) I have been appointed a 7 star general.
I will write a book on TigerDropping Leadership once this is all over.

Between a rock and a fricking hard place if you're Putin making that call. You look even worse either way.

Why would Russia start extensive bombing with peace talk tomorrow?
That means the talks are a farce and not in good faith

Those two really let us down on this one.

The tactically smart thing would be to let them operate from Polish airfields but escalation wise that may be a bridge too far.
I was thinking Lviv is far west enough that
NATO air power and possible SAMs is providing a good net over it, but too far to get to Kyiv and back after runs?

Have we ever had a 200+ page thread that wasn't stickied?

They've already ramped up their siege of multiple cities since the talks were announced. It is an old Russian strategy. Continue to pound the enemy even during cease fire/peace talks and use it as leverage go get your terms.

Man, I hope not. I just bought a box of Aging Room Quattro Nicaraguas and I really don’t want to smoke them in a nuclear fallout

The optimist in me would like to believe that the Russians are halting due to some pre-agreed upon provision involving the peace negotiations that are set to begin in a few hours.
