Residents of Kherson are going out into the streets with Ukrainian flags, waiting for the Armed Forces of Ukraine to enter the city.

Source: local outlet Most (Bridge), posting photos taken by witnesses

Details: People with Ukrainian symbols can be seen in photos from Svoboda (Freedom) Square, where rallies against Russian occupation took place in spring.

Some media outlets have reported that Ukrainian soldiers have already entered Kherson.

With the withdrawal of Russian occupiers from western Kherson, the amount of land Russia controls in Ukraine is down to exactly 18% (108’651 km2 - comparable in size to Guatemala, Bulgaria, or the state of Tennessee)

Note - This includes the pre-2022 Luhansk and Donetsk occupied areas + Crimea

Well, the Russians absolutely destroyed the Antonovsky Bridge.

The narrator in that short video made a good point. This suggests that the Russians don’t intend to try to return to Kherson. I think that is a reasonable inference.

All we're waiting for now is Ukrainian control of the dam at Nova Kakhovka, and whether or not Russia tries to blow the dam (I would guess not, but we'll see). There's video of Ukrainian troops in Beryslav (6 miles to the east of the dam) and in Tyahynka (15 miles to its west), so it won't be long. In fact, the Tyahynka video showed Ukrainian armored vehicles speeding through the city at what looked like 30 mph.

Again, no Ukrainian troops have faced any resistance in the last 24 hours. The Russians don't even seem to have taken the basic step of quickly planting some mines on the roads.

The stunning thing about these celebration videos is that the city has not been reduced to rubble like Mariupol and other cities attacked by Russians. The Ukrainian armed forces choked out the Russian military and also preserved the city and the safety of its inhabitants. This is the non-war crime method of fighting for control of civilian occupied territory.

If anyone had any doubts about whether there is a difference between Russian and Ukrainian methods, here is your answer.

I'm really struggling to find any semblance of Russian strategy since about the end of March.

Make no mistake, a conflict with China would be similar.

Strategy requires competence, creativty, autonomy, the willingness to entertain diverse viewpoints, and intrinsic motivation. In his quest for greater control and power, Xi has systematically squeezed anyone with these skills and/or leadership competencies out of the government and military.

Russia would flood its "Maginot Line" on the east bank if they blow the dam. East bank is higher ground from 50 to 100 feet higher.

There is still a risk that the Russians will target it with drones and missiles just like the rest of Ukraine.

Right. It doesn't make sense. I only leave the question open because Russia has done lots of things in this war that don't make sense.

My fear is that Russia will attack Kherson once they abandon it.

Guatemala is the same size as Tennessee? I learn so much from this thread.

Damn you distorted maps for making these equatorial countries look like so small.

Convicted felon for being a pedo, Scott Ritter, claims that Russia will pound it with artillery from the east bank because Russia has moved to high ground. The clusterfark idiot doesn't look at and/or know how to read a terrain map. It's 50-100 higher on the west bank.

He also doesn't know that Western artillery outranges Russian tubes -- and that's before HIMARS is considered.

I agree. The authorities in Kherson need to keep people off the streets and squares. The Russian artillery may be across the river but they are still within range of the city.
