Russia is finally starting to operate more effectively at night.

Russia's twilight attacks have left Ukraine in dire need of strike and night vision drones to launch counterattacks.

remains to be sean, one major difference is that in Mariupol, the Russians couldn't entirely encircle due to the south side of the plant being on the shorefront. In Lyman, they can fully encircle.
Also Lyman is MUCH smaller than Mariupol.

Russians have started copying Ukraine's tactic of rigging grenades to cheap quadcopters.

I'm sure all the world's backwater terror organizations are taking notes.

Anyone have any clue if they can put up the kind of fight Mariupol did being encircled?
Why stand and fight? Could they not do an orderly retreat across the Donest River and defend the River line? What’s the best option?

I saw that somewhere in the Asian area, this tactic was already being copied and used. Maybe it was Myanmar or Sri Lanka (don't remember where)

My opinion (worth what you paid for it) is that Ukraine is fighting a slow retreat trying to bleed the Russians as much as possible and slow their advance until they are ready to fully launch their attack into the Izyum flank.

I understand. But couldn’t they suck them in farther west and then hit their flank easier? Let’s see. It’s all happening in real time.

Here is visual proof of the "Terminator-2" BMPT weapon system deployed into Ukraine.
I started seeing posts on Twitter about the deployment of this weapon system a couple of days ago. This is one of the newest systems in the Russian arsenal and this is its first deployment into the war.
Russia has plans to export this system, so they are hoping it shows well on the battlefield.
https://twitter.com/KremlinTrolls/status/1526651769144623104
Wikipedia:
The BMPT "Terminator" (Tank Support Fighting Vehicle)is an armored fighting vehicle (AFV), designed and manufactured by the Russian company Uralvagonzavod. This vehicle was designed for supporting tanks and other AFVs in urban areas. The BMPT is unofficially named the "Terminator" by the manufacturers. It is heavily armed and armored to survive in urban combat. The AFV is armed with four 9M120 Ataka missile launchers, two 30 mm 2A42 autocannons, two AG-17D grenade launchers, and one coaxial 7.62 mm PKTM machine gun.
The BMPT is built on the chassis of the widely-used T-72 main battle tank. The BMPT was designed based on combat experience gained during the Soviet–Afghan War and the First Chechen War. Multiple prototypes of a tank support combat vehicle were created prior to the design of the current BMPT. The Object 199 "Ramka" was the prototype later to be designated the modern BMPT with the official producer being Uralvagonzavod. By late 2013, the only operator of the BMPT was Kazakhstan.
A small number were delivered to the Russian Ground Forces for evaluation beginning in 2005. The Russian Defence Ministry finally ordered the BMPT in August 2017.[citation needed] Deliveries of more than 10 vehicles were begun in early 2018. On December 1, 2021, the first in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation BMPT company of nine combat vehicles was introduced into one of the tank regiments of the tank division of the Central Military District. The version, unofficially dubbed the "Terminator-3," incorporates the chassis, hulls, and components of the T-14 Armata tank.

Even more vulnerable to Javelins and NLAWs than T-72/T-80/T-90s.
Of course, none of that really matters when you send them out in a column without infantry support.

This video shows a T80 being ambushed. The editing of this video is suspect as the foliage is much greener in the 1st half of the video than the 2nd. Regardless it still shows a T80 operating alone without any support and being ambushed.

It feels like the next week or so is going to be critical and likely to be fairly fluid on the ground situation.
It seems that Russia has abandoned most of its offensive actions elsewhere and focused its attention on trying to encircle Severodonetsk/Lysychans'k area. This might be the Russian way forward in the war. To try to do ONE thing at a time instead of a wide offensive, just take one town.
ETA: This also puts pressure on Ukraine to accelerate the pace of their offense on the flank.

Don’t most commercial drones work on just a couple radio frequencies? It doesn’t seem like they would be east to jam when they are directly overhead.

Interesting. That looks like a T-55 or T-62 chassis. I wonder if those are conversion jobs. That would be a popular option in the Middle East and the third world, as there are thousands of those models in service there.

An old (March) article that may or may not have been posted here: "On Killing Tanks" from The Modern War Institute (West Point)
MWI
It details the current state of APSs (active protection system) with the focus on Russian capabilites versus threats like the Javelin.

Note that part is about the Terminator-3 AKA the T-15 Armata the tweet is talking about the T-2 which is T-72 based. Russia wasn't planning to buy any T-2s because the T-15 existed but I guess they can't build those just like they can't build the T-14 MBTs.
Interesting looking at the T-2s I can't find a picture that shows one with either a hard or soft kill APS system. I thought they would have either Arena, Shtora, or both.
If they don't have Arena or other hard kill system it goes to Centinel's point about them being more vulnerable than their MBTs along with them being significantly lighter in the conventional armor area.
I wonder if that "column" is just the demonstrators they had or if they actually made an order or just bought some of the company's "lot" recently.
The huge variety of armor Russia has in the field must be an absolute logistical nightmare re parts. Their logistics are already fricked up like a football bat so this is just adding more complexity.

Yup. That's why I said they'll be even more vulnerable. Not that Shtora is working worth a damn on T-90s anyway.
