can you get lasik after turning 50?

If you're near sighted and don't currently need readers, you're probably a candidate, just be aware that it doesn't change the need for readers. There may be a different procedure that you're a candidate for, or just wait until you turn 65 and get cataract surgery- it's pretty much the same thing.

was great after the first 8 hours or so. Doc tells you to go home and sleep, do it. I went home, but couldn't fall asleep. Eyes were watering like crazy, just kind of annoying, like a bad allergy reaction. I finally fell asleep after about 5 hours of putting the numbing drops in as often as I was allowed. Woke up from my nap at dinner time and fell pretty good, was amazed at the things i could see. Went to bed and was fine the next day. A little blurry and got better day by day.

I got the surgery on a Thursday. Friday I felt fine but blurry vision and dryness. Saturday morning after I woke up, I could see better than ever.
Hope I have the same results. Surgery is a Wednesday then serving in a Wedding the Saturday so the recovery is my main concern.

Can anyone in the B'ham area recommend a Lasik doctor and one to stay away from?
Nearsighted and have worn glasses since 6th grade. Don't need readers and I read w/o my glasses.

I had to have PRK bc of my eye shape and it legit took me a whole week to recover. I hear lasik is nothing compared to PRK. The worst part for me was one of my eyes could not tolerate contact lenses anymore (which is partly why I got it done in the first place) so I was miserable until they took the post-op contacts out.
How long ago did you get it, and is your vision still 100%? Our local guy who does most of these types of surgeries I believe moved to only doing PRK.

Felt like someone punched me in the eyes repeatedly, but at that time they prescribed Vicodin so that helped.
I hear my case is an outlier though as far as pain goes…most are much smoother recoveries.
I STILL have 20/20 20 years later at 41, don’t need readers either.
1000x recommend.

Had mine in 2004 and still going strong. Itchy and dry eyes for a few weeks. Use the drops and follow the Dr’s directions.
Totally worth it.

It was incredibly easy. I went in very early and got home after taking the Valium and whatever they gave me. Slept for a few hours and woke up to already better vision but still a little blurry. Make sure to do the drops they prescribe and follow the directions. It was an incredible change by the next day. I have noticed that I am struggling with reading things close up but they were very clear that this procedure did not fix that or prevent that from happening. I may need readers soon but that’s just life. I had some starbursts at night for the first year or so but that has gotten better. I also noticed a little dip in my eyesight in year 2-3 that has since settled and not regressed. I definitely do not need glasses or contacts and feel everything has leveled off. Would definitely recommend.

I drove five hours to Houston the next day. Could see perfectly. Best money I ever spent.

I had it don’t a month ago. First couple of hours after I got home it felt like my eyes were severely burned. Was insanely miserable for 2-3 hours and wanted to claw my eyes out. So I took enough meds to knock me out for the rest of the day. Woke up that evening feeling great. Vision has been 20/20 ever since. Best advice is use the artificial tears drops religiously. My eyes dry out super quick since lasik and vision gets wonky if they do. They told me that would likely last a few months. So just use those drops like 4 times a day for the first month or two

How soon were you up and doing your normal routine?
The next day my vision was 20/15
Now my eyes looked like death from the procedure for a few days but everything was normal other than drops and sleeping with protective goggles for a few days.

I got it April 2023 so not a large sample size. I’m 34 so my vision isn’t expected to start getting worse for another 15 years or so. I’m definitely happy with it.

I was 20/15 next day too and for years after. Now 26 years later i’m back to using readers. One eye looked like bloody hell for 6-7 weeks. I took my Valium and someone else’s in the waiting room that didn’t want theirs. I couldn’t sleep, just remember walking into back yard and being able to distinguish leaves on the trees. Wife gave me something that knocked me out. I do recall wanting to rub my eyes really bad for a weeks, drops helped to some extent. Night vision was jacked up for a while as well.

A little discomfort the night of. But not horrible. Next day a touch sore but by that afternoon was good to go. Just really keep up with the drops they give you.
Also because the facility didn’t deal with insurance and you paid up front, they treat you like a king. Multiple follow up calls on how the eyes were doing and if I needed anything. Never had any medical treatment and care like it. Def recommend to those on the fence and have ability to do it.

One of the best decisions I’ve ever made and should have done it sooner.
My experience was a lot like yours and I'm so thankful I got it.
