I'm assuming they have a rail spur in there as well.

Lots of interconnected rail there. EDC marine shipping is enough to overcome the logistics of that though.

Ie, in 5 or 10 years will anyone go "remember that one in Jan 2022" or is it more regular than that?

yes. I guarantee it'll be an equipment operator in site specifics wearing double denim talking about it to some helper

(Non plant guy asking). What in an empty tank will explode?

Not kidding, I have no idea about these things. Hope everyone working there is ok.

Vapors. An empty tank full of vapors is much more likely to explode than a full tank.

Vapors. Often worse than if the tank was full of liquid.

Vaporized EDC is what caused the Westlake Geismar explosion in 2012. As a vapor, once it gets to a certain heat it can start a chain reaction with the iron in the vessel and, well, without somewhere to go, boom.

Question is, why didn’t the relief valve do its job? A lot to look into here. If the valve wasn’t serviced in a timely manner a planner could be in trouble. If the set pressure is wrong, an engineer could be in trouble.

Same would probably happen if that LNG plant just south of lake Charles blew up.

Glad to hear only minor injuries.

In a similar situation, a few years ago, several of us identified each other while riding on an evacuation bus to a muster point. Everyone was giving updates.

It was the cat cracker in Norco. Overhead line developed a leak and the result was ignition of a gas vapor cloud.

Yep. Especially on mornings like this where you had a colder night and sun warming everything up the next day.

EDC (C2H4Cl2) is highly flammable and decomposes when heated to form Hydrochloric acid. It boils at 181 deg F and at 68 deg F its vapor pressure is only 1.2 psi (absolute). Empty tanks don't produce smoke when they blow up. If only EDC vapor present it would (probably) be under vacuum. If so, air could have leaked in and something produced a spark causing detonation.

NW of Citgo is Carlyss. PPG is east of Citgo.
