The causeway is always fascinating to me. The first span in 1956 cost $46 million ($433 million in today's dollars). With as backward as this state always feels, for them to have the foresight to see the potential of this project at that time is incredible.

Don't know anything about the guy who apparently made this project a reality (Ernest M. Loeb Jr) but its impressive that he could see the long term success of this bridge.

Also, found it interesting that the 2nd span built in 1969 cost half of the original span ($30 million - $209 million in todays dollars). I'm sure advances in pre-stress concrete technology and having longer sections had a lot to do with that.

Also, i can't imagine what those two spans would cost today.

I just wish they had the foresight to add shoulders on the bridge when they first built it (although I don't know what the standards were back then).

Both spans were probably built faster than the I10 work recently done between Loyola and 610.

It always tickles me when I have to pay $5 to go from Mandeville to NOLA. Should be the other way around.

Too bad they didn't have the foresight to see that the damn thing would need a damn shoulder to pull over on. Or the foresight to see that the organization that runs it (the Causeway Commission...as I like to call the Fraudway Commission), would constantly go out of their way to find never ending construction projects all to justify the perpetual, overpriced tolls.

Second span was cheaper because they built the concrete plant for the first span and that was included in the price of the first part.

And I am sure he means $433 million in today’s dollars. Pretty good deal considering they are talking about in excess of $1- Billion for a new MS River bridge.

And perhaps also because they could use the first span to move men and materials more efficiently?

I would guess having a bridge already there to work off of made it a lot easier
