I’ve lived in both for about two decades each, with frequent visits back to Lafayette during the last two decades I’ve lived in Baton Rouge.
What personal experience do you have living in both of those cities?
I have a sister in the same shoes as you. First two decades here in Lafayette and the rest of the time in Baton Rouge. Twenty years ago she would say that Baton Rouge is better. She doesn't say that anymore.

Best place to live and work in Louisiana is outside of Louisiana.

I was born in Lafayette and lived there several years when I was young and still have a lot of relatives in that area. I love Lafayette and look forward to visiting a couple of times every year, but to say it's the best place in Louisiana to live may be a stretch.
I will say the food and the people are incredible and the south side of town is very, very nice, but the north side has all the signs of a once thriving area that now features an almost vacant mall and several other dilapidated businesses that have seen much better days.
I wouldn't hesitate to move back to Lafayette, but it definitely wouldn't be in the north side of town that I grew up in.

And there’s nothing wrong with that. Different people have different priorities. If she starts posting here, I’d be happy to chat about it with her.
But for those who haven’t lived in both for an extended period of time? Just kinda pointless

I don't like Lafayette due to the geographical blood feud and my love of gridlike roadway systems, but Lafayette > BR. Even the mot shitty parts of LAF (snobbery, roads/travel) are amplified in BR.
Unlike in Lafayette, in Baton Rouge, you can escape both if you try. Good luck in Lafayette trying to cross town and being limited to the four streets that cross the river

This is like beating a bunch of blind people at dodge ball.

I mean we all knew this already. It really isn’t even close

kind of this
i have never lived in Lafayette but visit atleast 2x per month, lived in BR for long time, grew up and moved back to LC.
all have their good points, but as a city, Lafayette is prolly the best overall imo. when you factor in quality of life, the nicer areas, affordability, schools, crime, traffic etc
for me being an engineer, LC or BR would be better but for most, Lafayette would prolly be better.

Have a couple in my neighborhood that I know pretty well that moved to Lafayette from Baton Rouge about 12 years ago when he got a job in Lafayette. They both were born and raised in BR and lived their adult lives there.
He got laid off several years afterwards (not oilfield) and I asked the wife if they were going to move back to BR. She says, “Oh hell no. We love it here. The people here are just the best. It’s much safer than Baton Rouge and just has this small town feel to it.”
The husband got another job in BR but he commutes a couple times a week.

This is just inside the corporate limits. This is why some good places to live still have horrible crime stats. These are the people who get 2 trash pick ups a week and can call animal control if they need to.
