Lafayette Parish delays opening of schools til after Labor Day

LPSS says a revised 2020-2021 Learn Lafayette School Reopening Plan to reflect this change will be released as soon as it is updated.

So what was it that pushed them over the edge between what they had already decided and now this decision? I need to watch what I say because my first cousin is a teacher in that school system.

My wife teaches at a public school here in Lafayette. I can tell you it’s because they (the school board) have know idea what they are doing. They are piecemealing plans together by the day. There is no definitive plan for how to return safely and what the protocols are. My wife gets emails daily from her principal with shite changing. This was inevitable, the leadership is incompetent at best.
Meanwhile my kids go to a private catholic school here, and we got a detailed, bullet point plan of exactly how the kids are going back to school, and rules and procedures for every possible scenario. And we got this straight from the principal in early July.

Yeah I figured it was like that. My cousin kind of told me the same. My kids are in Catholic School too, same thing. The principal told the parents that the kids will be at school learning as long as it's still allowed by the state. They aren't playing games. I noticed my son's class shrunk by 20 students. They're probably afraid of losing more, so they're taking the "hell or high water" attitude.

My wife is also a teacher in the LPSS system...
1. No pics.
2. She actually cant wait to get back to work in classroom as she feels so many underprivileged belong in her classroom vs. home
.
with that being said.This isn't surprising as none of the district supplies, from virtual learning support/software all the way down to chemicals required (per the rules, not the individual teachers) to clean the classroom have not been delivered to the district and are backordered...
I know there is a lot of teacher hate on this board but the truth is pretty much all of my wifes team wants to get back to work now but they are working more than ever not only preparing for a regular classroom but also a virtual one. Things are also changing by the day. Total clusterfrick.
Just remember education is a fundamental part of society not only in the education itself but in the childcare parts, we must all get back to work (I know its not the states responsibility to care for our kids, but cmon, let be real, its been a long time trend, all the way back to our grandparents...) And as mentioned above, my wife and her team deem themselves essential workers...

I work at a Catholic school in Lafayette diocese and we are opening on time. We’ve been communicative with parents all summer regarding plans. As I understand, Catholic schools are on a case by case basis, if a certain percent of students/faculty test positive different options will be implemented. I think we’ll all try to stay open unless there’s a lot of parent pressure—which I don’t see happening—or govt. intervention—which wouldn’t shock me.

I think the teachers don’t want to work narrative is overblown. There are definitely shitty teachers who would love to never go back but I don’t think it’s that big of a percentage. The unions just make more noise than everybody else.

First time they send them home I’m done til next school year. We already worked out a plan with other parents to hire a full time tutor to homeschool
