So his father helped roll tobacco-free cigars for Gianakakis and his friends, he said. The group still did not want to smoke on school property, so they went down to a local beach.
Little did the group know that the cigars, and the photo, would derail their lacrosse season and make headlines across Massachusetts. Gianakakis and eight other players were barred from playing in the game by the school district, forcing Ipswich to forfeit the semifinal because the team could not field enough players.

They posed for the picture and posted it themselves I believe.
This is a pretty insane rule but if you knew it was a rule so much to the point that you tried to use fake cigars, and you knew you were about to play in a semifinal playoff game, I think i probably would have erred on of the side of just not doing it.
I'm not defending the penalty but also there appears to be a lack of common sense from the players and parents as well.

yep, but this is the day and age of zero accountability, deferred gratitude, or adherence to any rules or protocol that doesn't suit me

After reading the full article it looks like they brought one of the fake cigars to the principal, so yeah i'm inclined that whomever made this decision should probably lose their job.

Or do it, take the pics, but don't put them in the internet. I know that posting them is the whole point of taking pics these days though.

Yeah, there were so many opportunities to make sure this wasn't a story until after the playoffs were concluded.
But at the same time, screw whomever made the final call for lacking even the slightest bit of reasoning.
