LA State Computers Hacked (Confirmed)

BATON ROUGE - An investigation is underway after some sort of hack forced state computer network officials to disconnect Louisiana government from the internet Monday.
Among the services impacted by the computer outage were driver's license and other DMV business, document filing for food stamps and email communication with most people on the Louisiana network. The websites of most state agencies were also off-line Monday.
Some state employees were sent home early because work was not able to be conducted.
State officials said the government computer network was accessed by someone and something from outside the network in an apparent hack but by Monday afternoon were confident private information was safe.
No records were compromised, authorities told WBRZ, and believed tax information, healthcare records and other forms of data held by the state related to citizens was not in jeopardy.
Computers were disconnected from the internet and some employees told WBRZ they were instructed to power computers off.

The Monday after a close election. Hmmm....

Ironically the election results website from SOS is down as well. Russian meddling in our elections. I demand an investigation.

On an average day, they're too incompetent to notice the Chinese stealing your info.

Word I’m hearing is that a state contractor did something by accident that ended up exposing the state network.

I'd guess they clicked a link in an email.

No, I’m hearing they had a VPN up coming from their system into the state’s system that got compromised.

That could explain the 40000 under votes in the governor’s race. Should I really believe that many people only voted for governor and nothing else on the ballot?

I am hearing rumblings of ransomware and is being kept very hushed......

I’ve heard similar, though no word on whether the data actually got encoded.

Louisiana just got hit with one of the most sophisticated Ransomware attacks around. The Shadow Kill Hackers are trying to extort the state with a amount of a rumored $20 million dollars.
Believed to be the same folks who shut down Baltimore, Johannesburg, Tallahassee, Albany, and several other cities over the last two years. If it is be prepared for a prolonged shutdown.

They should be good so long as backups weren’t compromised. It’s going to be a PITA tho.

This assumes the backup archives didn’t get controlled as well.
The amount of data these days is really too large to be doing tape backup or any other traditional physical backup as opposed to transmission over the network.
If the network is compromised and they gained control of everything before showing their hands, it could all be fricked.
