Red Cross refused to talk to me, after Katrina, when I was frantically trying to get information about my daughter who was holed up at University Hospital. She went to work Friday night before Katrina and didn't get out of the hospital until the following Friday, along with all the other staff. Frick the Red Cross!!!

Thank you church for any help they can offer. I am sure it will be appreciated.

We just cleaned out our closets, so I have boxes and bags of men's and women's clothes. Where can I take it around Bluebonnet area?

In my experience (and as others have said) local churches and charities are the best way to help people directly.

Donations to shelters are the most immediate need. They can use most anything you can spare. Pillows, bedding, towels, and toiletries always seem to be in short supply.

If you want to give to a national charity, Samaritan's Purse helped out a ton of people in the Monroe area this spring. Red Cross gets all the publicity because they have the most money. From my observations, though, they are very inefficient and not very well organized at the local level.

I know I'll catch flack for this, but healing place church in BR does a ton of mission work and no doubt will be absolutely doing a ton for our city with this flood. I'm Catholic and don't even go there but know this is the truth.

If you're Catholic, you could get online to the Diocese of BR and donate and say for the floods-it'll be for Carholic Relief Charities. It's my understanding that a few of the Catholic Churches/schools are serving as shelters right now.

The sad thing is, some of the largest churches in Denham Springs are underwater. They are really short on shelters in that area with churches and schools flooded.

The preacher that lives a few houses down from me was busy trying to collect supplies to bring to BR in a box truck while his own subdivision was filling with water. The church they were planning on bringing started flooding so I'm pretty sure they spent thing night in the truck. Im sure some local churches are going to be doing clothing and food drives. Google search around and you should be able to find stuff.

Went through my closet yesterday (already planned on doing it) so I'm ready to send clothes. Is that needed or would it be more helpful to just donate money to a local charity?

After Katrina in Chalmette, a group from Alabama came down with a trailer full of five gallon buckets with lids on them. Inside the buckets were small first aid kit, toothbrush, toothpaste, small toiletries, and then roll of paper towels, some rags and cleaning supplies that contained bleach. This will help out those whose houses were flooded as the water goes down and they start to get in and gut and clean out the house.

If I find a place around here that needs clothes I'll post the information on here, have a bunch sitting around that I just never got around to donating. Now's as good a time as ever.

Just an update: if anyone in BR needs anything or a place to get away from the floods let me know now that I'm awake

I have a baby and haven't had to evacuate yet, but if I do there are a lot of things babies need that people don't normally about unless they have one! Clothes and toiletries are important, but I'd also suggest diapers in various sizes, formula, baby clothes, even pack and plays if you have some you are looking to donate. Before I went to bed last night I made sure our diaper bag was packed so I could grab it and go if needed. People who had no warning didn't have that luxury.

Everytime there's been a flood or disaster in my area I always see these people out helping. I'm sure there are many more groups like them but if your wanting to donate this is a good start.
