It's hilarious that we have multiple casinos in our state capital and a state lottery but there is a debate over legalizing sports betting

Didn't think about Harrah's good call. For big events like the Final Four/Super Bowl/CFP im sure that would bring in boatloads jugging by the crowd in there everynight in January

The real resistance isn’t from evangelicals. It’s actually from truck stop casinos and video poker. They want to be able to do off track betting and have sports books, too. So, because the bill would only legalize it in the big casinos, the little gus are going to ruin it for everyone again like they did last year. If they can’t have it, no one can.

Where have I heard that before . . .
If the law is too onerous from a tax/vig perspective, bettors will simply stay with their bookie.

That is 100% correct. I don't have a problem with making wagers in truck stops or bars.

Agreed, but the casinos have to bribe the governor for their licenses, so the graft is more concentrated and controlled. It also makes regulating it far easier with fewer points of sale. So, the state gov cronies should favor big casino only. However, Edwards was denied by the leg the right to put a big casino on the tangipahoa river, so he doesn’t gaf about the big casinos.

Sure, people who are into sports betting already have a bookie, but legalizing it is not about profiting solely off sports bettors. It's trying to gain the tax revenue from all the regular Jimmy's and Joe's who'd lay down a bet at Harrah's, Golden Nugget etc. if it was convenient, but don't want to go through the trouble of finding a bookie. At casinos in Lake Charles & Shreveport, you're able to attract some business from Texas. In BR & NOLA, you can keep residents from going to Mississippi to place a legal bet. Plus, you probably rake in tons of money from tourists in NOLA at Harrah's.
There's lots of moolah to be made from the general public.

I don’t have a bookie, but I could see myself hanging out at a sports book at Laberge on a Sunday afternoon when the weather’s kinda shitty watching NFL games and putting small bets on them while sipping craft beer and cocktails. If they make it anything like the sports book at Beau Rivage, I’ll probably make it a weekly tradition.

Wrong. They did $1m when it was in its infancy in 2018 from August to November.
Also, of note is it increased other revenues at the casino not related to sports betting. More hotels, more other gambling, f&b and on and on. Which the state gets tax money off of that as well.
