They really don’t—it’s not like they’ll be ultimately successful. Legalization will come within 5 years regardless. For now there are just too many boomer idiots from North La in the legislature who are in bed with their local sheriffs and/or too stupid to gauge societal change to get it passed.
Thank god for term limits, or every Republican in the legislature would be 87 years old.

Senate adjourned early today again with no discussion or votes on the medical bills.

Taxation bill voted down 48/47.
So we were 1 vote away from having legal recreational marijuana in LA? Am I interpreting that right?
That a lot closer than I would have guessed. I think next time it comes up it’s a done deal.

I think you need 2/3rds for a tax bill to pass and from what I’ve read here and elsewhere, the “next time it comes up” is probably 3 years away lol.

No - since this was a tax, it required 2/3rds. So 70 votes would have passed. Never had a real shot.
With the tax failure, that means 699 (the legalization bill) was pretty much moot.

Anyone got a response yet from these spineless twats? It would do 0 good to email or call my rep. Sherman Mack is an avowed reefer madness promoter and even tried to torpedo a bill to lower criminal penalties for simple possession in this session.
It would hurt his personal interests bc there would be less criminal defense cases.

Nope, emailed twice (once last week), and haven't heard a peep.
I have.
To clarify, I emailed Tony Bacala regarding HB 524. Here is my communication with his legislative assistant:
Her first email was in response to my supporting HB 524.
quote:
Mr. Blueboxer,
Representative Bacala is in favor of Medical Marijuana. He retired as Chief Deputy in the Ascension Parish Sherriff’s Department so he is not for the legalization of recreational usage of cannabis. He did not vote for passage of HB524 but it did get enough YES votes to move to the House floor.
Best,
Donna W. Hebert
I emailed back and forth about this bill and HB 434.
Here is my response:
quote:
Donna,
I was disappointed Rep Bacala's vote on HB 434.
I was also a little surprised in your response below at the reasons for his vote.
I mean no disrespect, but if this is the thought process, I'm tremendously disappointed and may need to reassess my support for Rep Bacala.
Im assuming Rep Bacala understands that he is a "representative" for the will of his constituents.
Not his own.
He should vote depending on what his constituents want. It doesnt matter if he was a former sheriff. What difference would that make? The constituents decide how the vote goes. Not solely the Rep. We need Rep Bacala to represent the interest of the people in his electorate.
This is exactly how Bill Cassidy got himself censured in Louisiana: By not listening to the will of his constituents.
Id also be curious what role the Sheriff's Union is playing in this decision....
She just responded with his cell phone number and told me to call.
Going to collect my thoughts and make some notes to reference before I call him this evening.
Please post any questions you'd like me to ask.
Id almost rather have this discussion in public, but I'll take what I can get.

I want to know straight up if he took money from the SA and if he voted on his convictions or on the will of the people. I have a really, really hard time believing that any lawmaker (even those in the northern bible belt) can proclaim that his/her constituents are not in favor when over 70% of the general public in the state is. To me when the margin is that great, "it's not that simple" just isn't a valid excuse.

One of my biggest gripes is that even opponents to recreational acknowledge that it is inevitable and just a matter of time. Basically admitting that losing whatever economic advantage that comes with being an “early adopter” for our region is worth “fighting the good fight” or whatever.

What poll is everyone citing that shows the majority of LA residents support legalization?
I'm trying to see if it is broken down by parish so I have a little more to throw at my rep when I email him.

How can someone be in favor of medical marijuana but not recreational?
I'd like to know his basis for that, knowing that the only reason you could be in favor of medical marijuana but not recreational is that if marijuana was addictive like opiates which necessitated a prescription.
Here's the real answer of Bacala... because he would look like a heartless shite if he opposed medical marijuana but is still able to oppose recreational marijuana with the "help" of special interests.

In other words he doesn’t want to stop the money train for jails and prisons.

Any other responses yet?
In all seriousness, I admire those reaching out. I honestly don't think I'd be able to keep my composure trying to hold a civil conversation with any of these snakes.

What happened to We the People?
How many times has he/she voted against us, the people?
The politicians are not the people.

I got a call in my office from Rep Wheat today in response to my email. Unfortunately I was out. He didn’t leave a call back number
so there’s that
so there’s that

The whole dialogue around legalization is completely twisted.
Conservatives seem to believe that freedoms are only worth it if there's more tax revenue in it for them.
Why not just be for freedom?
A true small government Republican should just want to legalize it and not worry about taxing or restricting it in any special way beyond limiting it to adults.
