I wouldn't live in a place where 500k meant that I had to live like a pauper. The pay difference isn't near enough to compensate

$200-$300/sqft is not bad in a regular market.

$300-$400/sqft is not bad for a lower class CA home.

$400-$500/sqft won't buy you a damn thing in a good part of CA.
