but DLS is something of a "new" school
No better example of how old of a city NOLA really is.
DLS will be celebrating their 75th anniversary next year. And by local standards, it is absolutely someting of a "new" school.

Desi was almost white. The black power shifted to the projects and lower class black neighborhoods. Central City and the ninth ward/ NO East elect the mayor. Plus Latoya got her name out early. She had signs up on billboards fully a year before the election.
The 7th Ward Creole types have lost favor amongst the African Americans. It was hard to get a Creole elected.JP Morrell was the exception for the AtLarge seat. That being said, JP is probably the most competent to be mayor. Helena Moreno is effective in getting things done.

The DLS pre 1990 was an entirely different school than it is today.
Back then it had a mix of old uptown Catholic families and some Metairie and Best Bankers sprinkled in. 98% white boys. Today it’s co-ed, much smaller, and the demographics have changed dramatically.
It’s basically a new school.

I still can't comprehend how she, seemingly good candidate with old school Nola family, lost (and bigly) to Compton ape face.
Because her brother, Bunny, went to the Marc Morial School of Shakedown Corruption Politics.
It's hard to tell if Desi is actually a good person, or if she only appears to be a good person because Bunny does all the dirty work.

Every mayor is crooked. The difference is transplants will suck the marrow out of the bone whereas a local will leave enough on the bone to at least run the city.

Also in those days there was a contingent of Jewish students.
DLS and the Jewish Community Center across the street had a good relationship. When I was there in the '70s I had a few classes in the JCC. DLS also used the JCC swimming pool.
I also remember that in one of my religion classes we took the streetcar to Touro Synagogue and the Rabbi spoke to us and explained the similarities and differences between Catholicism and Judaism.

Yep
As bad as Latoya is charbonnet was worse
Classic shakedown type politics with bad bad associations
Also, Sydney Torres wanted Latoya and did all he could to smear charbonnet
Now he has a contract again to pick up garbage in a dirty city
