My tenant. She texted me and said she was struggling but just landed a job and would figure it out. I texted her she doesn't need to worry about rent in April and it isn't a loan its a gift for keeping my house clean plus you've never missed a payment in 5 years. I got an amazing hallmark card today.

I hope that’s true because that’s amazing

The area actually has an extremely high cost of living

Gas, food and utilities are high than anywhere else I’ve lived

The town actually puts a surcharge on gas and electricity and that’s how the town makes money.

The housing market is extremely fricked here. The 1/4 of town that isn’t the ghetto the avg house goes for $1200-1600 a month in rent or runs your about $220k to buy.

The problem is the military housing allowance here maybe can cover 2/3 of that.

Of all my assignments this the only one where base housing is a max capacity bc even the officers can’t afford to live off base

The average rent in Birmingham Alabama and Baton Rouge Louisiana is over a grand a month.

Man, I am really surprised how many people have zero savings

Something like 69% of Americans have less than $1,000 in savings. About 45% have 0.

The federal stimulus is far from a reality as of April 2, 2020. Even the fricking government doesn't know when they are gonna pay that shite out lol

It’s been a month since I filed taxes and still haven’t got my refund yet

Got my State today tho

That really is depressing

A good start for people like that would be to just put half their tax return in a savings account

Instead they go out and blow it all

I’m still working with a reduction pay. I’d love to not pay rent, but my landlord is a good buddy. I know he has to pay his bill on this piece. I have no choice.

FWIW. When I lost my job two years ago he waived my rent for a month. Dude is the goat

You can find cheaper rentals in so so areas. Most would be over 1k for a 2br in a nice area. $500/mo you are regularly hearing gun shots or you have a 45 minute commute.

How's that work out for people who owe taxes and lost their jobs? Asking for a friend.

That just is shite luck

But a majority of the people with zero savings are not the type to owe the government money during tax season

I can’t stand when someone blows through their money either but I just don’t know how I feel about it all. I don’t think property owners should be on the hook either.

I owed last year so I didn't file until April 15.

They took it out of my bank account on April 15

And it just keeps going up a level. What about small real estate companies, community banks, credit unions etc that don't get paid?

And we've mostly been talking about rent. What if you have a $1700/mo mortgage payment and you can't make it? You can't just decide to go rent a cheap place without wrecking your credit.

Yeah. It’s a very tough situation. I was defending the shite out of a major company yesterday on Reddit. I asked myself - who even am I right now?

No it isn't

I've worked in Birmingham for 17 years. Had an apartment here for all that time and have a home and live 130 miles north of here.

I have a 2 B/B apartment for 800 per month. I DGAF where your numbers are from but they are BS.

A decent amount of local rentals are owned by small businesses and regular people. My dad has several rentals in Central in a LLC. Luckily, they are all paid for and he doesn't depend on the money to live on but a lot of people do.

It's a shitty situation all around even if you kick up the pain a level or two. Somebody is getting fricked and it's not always some big Wall Street bank.
