my wife(no pics,) has "rescued" three dogs from the shelter, rescue fees so far have totaled around tree-fiddy(obligatory,) but really closer to $650

We got lucky with ours. He was 6 months old, already been vaccinated and neutered. I think we spent less than $100 to adopt him.

He sheds like a son of a bitch though. Looks like a rat terrier, but with a long tail.

OP doesn't want any shedding, so he probably wants to look for something with more with hair.

And majority of them come with skin issues, heartworms, or massive anxiety/social issues.

haven't experienced that but the purebreds that we've had have had more innate health issues hat traditionally come with the breed

Purebreds have more health issues when they've been the result of too many generations of inbreeding.

But as for automatically writing off shelter dogs because they may have questionable backgrounds - pfffft.

If he really thinks bubba down the street does a better job breeding labs for beer money, then all power to him.

Get a smooth coat miki. We have one and it is the best dog ever.

They are mild mannered and great companions.

We don't want another shitzu, but we do want a similar kind of dog. Any suggestions?

Try a Shih Tzu/Bison mix also called a Teddy Bear. We have one and highly recommend. Has some Shih Tzu attributes and some Bison.

Not really similar but get a wheaten terrier. They don't shed, are hypo-allergenic, and are really friendly family dogs. We love ours!

Here's a cute Google pic of one.

Might try a Scotty. They're sweet, fun dogs and don't shed too bad.

Any kind of wire-haired terrier would be a good bet.

He's a feisty fricker too.....

Very vocal too about needing to go out, being fed, treats, everything.

Family member has one that’s on its last leg.

She’s been a hell of a dog for 12 years and I don’t like smaller dogs.
