It obviously doesn’t account for people doing other stuff during halftime, but do these comparisons for new “records” account for the population growth of maybe around 90 million people in the US alone since Michael Jackson’s performance in any fashion (likely more with recent Biden allowed illegal immigration)?

Subtract 20. Not one fricking person here was watching. It was on, and we could hear it and we made fun of the mumble-rap, but we were enjoying beverages and food, which I suspect half the country was also doing.
The halftime show is not the event for most people, and I'd say that when it's the Who or Paul McCartney or whoever. Now, I did watch Katy Perry.

Two Sundays in a row, because it happened at the Grammy's the week before. Wasn't as good, but still the slow walk up to the stage to make sure everyone sang it was greatness.
