With so many storms affecting Louisiana on or near that day, the state should declare it a statewide Remembrance Day.
We could get fancy and make the day a state holiday observed the Monday prior to Labor Day. That would give us 2 4 day weeks in a row. I am in even though an extra holiday wouldn’t necessarily mean a day off for me, but would mean more work.

I had a '67 Corvette that got some rain on it that day.

Ida was stronger than Katrina. Most people don’t realize that.
Yep. Katrina’s biggest impact was the failed infrastructure and the subsequent flooding.

Katrina brought much worse than wind and rain

Ill never forget evacuating using contraflow on I-10 west at the split right before the 310 exit. Seeing the red reflectors all the way to Jackson was a trip. Totally surreal experience.

There are a couple of books that describe the barbarism that new orleans descended into after Katrina. The Great Deluge by Doug Brinkley was one.
Gov. blanco and the mayor of new orleans (nagin) were completely out of their league when it came to response.
Also I 've been told by some of my elderly friends that Betsy was just as bad for new orleans.

Hell, Mississippi too. Don’t forget about us in the landmass

If the levees hadn’t failed, New Orleans would basically turned out how it was affected by Ida. Best thing about Ida was the fact we realized the new system worked.
However, I think Katrina’s winds were a lot stronger when it was at its peak in the city. There was much more window damage during Katrina than Ida. Prime examples of that is the Hyatt and Galleria had a large majority of their windows blown out, where none were blown out during Ida.

When I got home from school the day Katrina made landfall there were a number of talking heads on TV who were talking as if Katrina had flopped. It wasn’t until that evening that media outlets began to report that water levels were beginning to rise in and around New Orleans.
I remember listening to the radio (was in Mobile, so no power) that night even and it sounded like NOLA had really dodged a bullet.
Left the radio on all night. Went to go piss at like 4 am and the news was talking about the flooding and my heart fell.

Maybe for winds, but Betsy’s flooding was nothing like Katrina

I think about that time every so often. Last night was one of times. I didn't think about the date and that today was the anniversary. I lost a lot, my dad died the week before and I lost every thing in my house a few days later. The most uncertain time in my life.
I stayed for both Katrina and Ida. Katrina went through faster. With Ida I thought I was going to lose it being locked up and the hours of thinking the roof was going to blow off my house.

I remember it well. I remember this board that weekend. It went from a distinct “ who gives an F “ to “ holy shite we are all going to die “ in 48 hours.
