I think it's a trucker thing. They use it when they're almost home but almost up to their 8 hours or whatever their legally allowed driving time is. That way they can get home faster, off the clock, without having to stop and wait the 8 hours or whatever they normally would have to. Guess OP is a trucker

We get K time and I haven’t worked any overtime in at least the last 10 years. It’s 40 hours a week and that’s it. I don’t work for free.

My mom got that working for the state, she was a salaried employee. If you work an hour of OT you get to take of 1 1/2 hours of work. However, you dont get paid for it till you retire.

I know a few Baws that work in the state prison system. Instead of working for overtime, your time over 40 rolls into what is called K time. K time can be cashed out as days off, which you can probably never take because of short staffing. Or it can be saved as an extra check at retirement or leaving job

not everyone. Most only get 1 hour of K time for 1 hour worked

Now it's making sense. This must explain some of the resentment towards the K Lady - the reminder of time stolen is just too painful for some.

Sounds a lot like comp time. Comp starts with a “c”, not a “k”, for the Arky educated.

Am I reading this right?

If you work 41 hours this week, you get paid 41 hours, but 1 hour (at 1.5x hourly) of it is deferred till retirement.

Then next week you can work 38.5 hours but still get paid for 40?

So you get paid twice for this same hour?

It’s a state employee form of banked OT. Basically, the state can work people beyond 40 hours in a given week, but they do not have to immediately pay them for the OT. They give them K time and will eventually pay them for it, but here’s the catch: 1) they will not tell employees when they will payout on K time; and 2) if you take sick or vacation leave the first thing they use is your K time. It’s funny how the state can mandate and regulate private industry with regards to compensating people for OT, but be absolved from meeting the same requirement.

Wrong. State employees can only cash in a max of 25 days. K time is compensatory time for employees who have to report to work outside of their salaried schedule. Custodians reporting during holidays, or the day after a hurricane hits, for example.

EDIT: At least that is how it is for school bd employees.

I like "K time." Sure, I'd rather get paid over time, but time off with pay is a good deal, too.

Agree. I’ve seen more people get screwed than helped by K time.

My dad cashed out 6 months of K time when he retired.
If you're in it for the long haul at your job, it's a great incentive to not miss work for hangovers and belly aches like we do in the private sector.

It's one of the few things govt gets right.
