re: Just how bad is Jackson, MS?

It most certainly can be. As others have said, the suburbs, particularly Madison and Brandon, are much nicer than those around Baton Rouge. As far as the city proper, Jackson is absolutely the worst place I've ever had the misfortune to live. Thank God that I was only there for 2 years right after college. I took a job for the money and was regretting it less than six months later. They also have a racist for a mayor, but I'm pretty sure he's not as bad as Sharon Weston Broome.

Absolutely. Jackson could be awesome.
So could Baton Rouge, with the right city leadership and less culcha.

But when development is turned down because it is being done by white people, you cant get very far.
I see this situation occurring in BR pretty soon, at least for city-owned projects that Broome has control over.

Not familiar with the area but it's at Entergy. Office job - not in any of the plants.
Their HQ is an easy drive in from Madison, but I saw in another thread you are single. If you are looking to buy a house Madison is good but there aren't any apartments. As far as commuting goes, try to stay off 220.

Good point. Madison doesn't allow apartments. It keeps the culcha out. So if you are looking to rent, Reservoir/Flowood/the right part of Ridgeland.

Jackson itself is mostly a shithole -- S Jxn is roughly on the level of NBR. W Jxn is worse than anything you've ever experienced -- avoid even driving through there at all costs.
There are a couple of neighborhoods worth visiting, namely Belhaven and Fondren, but stay alert even then and under no circumstances even consider living there, even if you don't have kids.
Some of the suburbs are quite nice, such as Madison as previously mentioned, as well as The Reservoir and Brandon.
I'm not familiar with places further out in Rankin County such as Pelahatchie, but as a general rule: the further you get from Jxn itself, the nicer things are. An exception to this rule is Canton (where the auto plant is) -- don't live there if you can avoid it.
Clinton isn't that bad, but it's on the wrong side of town -- not that there's a right side of Jxn, but the W is the wrongest side. It has Miss College and most luxuries you'll need: WalMart, Big Lots, Dollar Tree.
Byrum and Richland are two other places you might consider as cheaper alternatives to Madison/Brandon/Reservoir
TLDR: If this is a big opportunity you should definitely consider taking it. Just don't live in Jxn itself.

Take the job, but consider living in Flowood, Madison, Brandon, or the Reservoir area. If your household income is 80k+ you can live like a fricking king here.

Technically rentals are allowed, if the owners pay a ridiculous fee ($20k) per unit. It has held up in court. No one is building a 100 unit apartment complex with that sort of requirement.

I’d rather move to Shreveport.

looks like a bomb went off on some of their roads.
Jackson is the only Capital City built on a volcano.
The soils in that area consists mainly of sensitive clays and droughts/wet seasons definitely cause issues with their roadways. Same goes for building foundations. Most of the foundations for buildings we do in that area are post tensioned slabs.

Someone explained it to me like this.
The type of clay under Jackson is unique. Imagine you have a piece the size of a marble. If the heat gets high enough, it can expand to the size of a basketball. Then if it gets wet enough, it contracts to the size of a tennis ball.

Like others have said, live in either Brandon or Madison. Both have low crime rates and plenty to do.
The city of Jackson sucks IMO. Their taxes are out of control and their infrastructure sucks.
