Dude you lived in BR and Mobile...it's no worse than either of those shite holes. If I was to recommend somewhere in Mississippi...I personally like it in Oxford. Has a classic feel to it but also very nice. It has that quintessential Southern feeling to it. Hard to describe. I like it in Oxford personally.

With Byrum, be aware that the whole town smells like the inside of a dog’s a-hole.

They claim it is due to a pet food factory. I don’t care what it is, but it’s rank enough just visiting there.

If you're in a Prius with a Bernie '16 bumper sticker, Belhaven or Fondren might appeal to you.

F-250 with Yeti and Salt Life stickers, head to Rankin County.

You can tell a lot about a place based on the shopping areas

Madison/Ridgeland

Flowood/Reservoir

Brandon/Pearl

Highland Village/Northeast Jackson

Jackson Proper

Jackson is bad, but it’s still better than Baton Rouge.

Jackson is not that bad. Maybe a 5 or 6. It's just boring as shite.

A dollar goes a long way in MS. If you're scared of black peoples, move to Madison.

If you're not scared of black people, then Clinton, Flowood, pearl, and the area just east of Ridgewood road. Lots of people in the area make an honest living at the Nissan plant.

I've lived in jackson a good portion of my adult life. I can tell you which areas to avoid at all costs, aka Virden dition, the queens, west jackson and anything of McDowell road.

Jackson is like any other city - it has areas not to go. It is not, however, a "third world country". Having grown up in South Louisiana, Jackson reminds me a lot of home: potholes everywhere, great food, and worthless government.

The suburbs (Madison/Rankin county) are very nice. However, if you're young and single, there is literally nothing to do there. I stayed in the city limits for well over 5 years and never had a single problem. Does it happen? Sure. But that's the same as every major city. Keep your street smarts just as you would in New Orleans, Memphis, Dallas, etc. and it's perfectly safe.

Big perk of Jackson: the cost of living is SIGNIFICANTLY lower. Your auto/home/flood will be about half of what you're paying in Baton Rouge - possibly lower. Rent is a joke compared to New Orleans (2 bedroom townhouse is about $850 in Jackson, and it's not a dump).

If you take the job, good luck. There's a ton of medical students and law students that live in the Jackson proper area. If it was really the war zone this board made it out to be, no one would live there.

Hahahaha. The accuracy here is impeccable. In all honesty though.... stay north of I-220 split or east of The Outlets of Mississippi, and you'll be good. I saw someone mention the Queens. Don't ever go there period, unless it is absolutely necessary for some ungodly reason. Not the place you want to be after dark.

Have been in BR for about 7 years and Mobile before that. So I'm pretty used to shitty cities.

What if you lived somewhere that was actually nice instead?

Lived in Jackson and it made Baton Rouge an attractive place to live.

9.

If you don’t mind 15 minutes in traffic to a suburb, live in Madison.

If you want to live in a small town and don’t mind a little more of a commute, live in Flora... 25 minutes to Jackson Proper, but if you want something to do with the kids or a date night, you can be in the back door of Madison in 15 minutes or so.

I haven't been there for 40 years but I did live in Flora then when I was six. I played T-ball for Nell's Variety Store; there were only 2 stores in town that sponsored T-ball teams so we had like 25 kids on each team and the rules said each team had to bat through the order each inning. God bless my parents for sitting through 4 hour T-ball games.

Sorry this doesn't answer any questions but I saw Flora and had to share; downvote if you must.
