Just how bad are nursing homes in Louisiana?

Seems like there are routine stories about abuse, neglect, and even fraud in the media but nothing ever really gets done.
Even back to Hurricane Ida where 800+ patients were left neglected in a warehouse.

Then more recently, a patient's family suspected abuse and started documenting the issues. And it turns out their suspicions were justified.

After watching 843 of his residents suffer following their evacuation to an ill-equipped warehouse without enough toilets, showers or air conditioning, state health officials shut it down and began moving patients elsewhere.
Dean acted quickly to salvage what he could of his crumbling empire, ordering that his nursing home bank accounts be swept clean of millions of dollars.
While his residents and their relatives spoke out about losing loved ones and recounted the horrors of the warehouse, Dean went on a spending spree of nearly $2 million for firearms, antiques, a luxury car, paydays for family members and more.

A nursing home with a history of problems is once again at the center of controversy after a family alleges their loved one died due to the neglect she endured there.
Brad Guerin said he began documenting problem after problem at Pointe Coupee Healthcare, after visiting his 96-year-old grandmother every day.
"She had several issues," Guerin said. "They were leaving her with vomit covered in her bed. They would drop her food trays. They didn't replace them when they dropped them. They would bring food in and not feed her and even after she had a stroke. They would leave it out of her reach."
Guerin said after being in the facility for a few days, Ruby Guerin developed a large bed sore on her foot, deep into her flesh. Her fingernails looked like she had been playing in the dirt. He even captured videos of flies on her face.
"Every time I met with the administrator, initially, it was 'We are sorry,'" Guerin said. "We are trying to educate our staff. That led to meetings with the director and finally the regional director. Then they said, yeah, we know we have a bad reputation here and said it's a chicken-and-an-egg problem. They told me they don't know how to get a good reputation without good nurses, and don't know how to get good nurses with a bad reputation ... like I'm supposed to answer that problem."
In 2020, the WBRZ Investigative Unit exposed a number of problems at the facility.
The WBRZ Investigative Unit found the facility has a history of problems. According to inspection reports available for public viewing then, Pointe Coupee Healthcare had had 13 recent violations, and the facility was fined in August 2019, $36,000 for failing to timely report suspected abuse and neglect. In 2018, the home was also cited for violating federal standards protecting residents from the spread of infections.

Normal for this state unfortunately.
You get some which are a cut above the rest which charge accordingly and you end up with a bunch of shitholes which are Medicare fraud centers.

Richest country in the history of human existence and our elderly are left to rot in conditions that wouldn’t be allowed for zoo animals

Well…. I’m pretty sure the workers aren’t exactly making a shite ton of money so they tend to be more uh…. Rough around the edges.

Why are you blaming the govt for the way kids treat their elderly parents?

Louisiana nursing home lobbyist are right behind the lawyer lobbyist in this state. What does that tell you right there. The tech and aide pay is way behind the rest of the country. The aides cleaning shite, changing diapers, feeding them etc are only making 8-10 dollars an hour. You aren't exactly getting people who care about there job at that pay rate.
Having said that there are people who really do care and try their best but there are just not enough of them unfortunately.

Can we have a post about things that are good about Louisiana. There is never a good post about the conditions of Louisiana.

Have you seen the staff at these facilities?
I'm almost certain they don't require a HS education nor do they perform a background check

Go read about the Katrina nursing home facility that didn’t evacuate and had all of their patients drown.
But as stated, the owners of these places make serious money and own the politicians

Well I was told by a construction company representative (his company does work for the state) that the reason for Louisiana’s seemingly endless infrastructure issues is because of soil conditions.

Just look at the typical caregiver and you'll have your answer

Ask him if they have done a lot of work in Mississippi, and be sure to mention the term “Yazoo clay”.

Yeah I have to agree that this is more of the issue here. It’s a shame nursing homes are the way they are but why anyone would put their parents in one knowing how bad they are is something I don’t understand.

People need to realize, when you put a family member in a nursing home, the primary care giver, the person who has the most contact with your relative, is the lowest paid, least vetted, and least qualified employee on staff. The actual janitor is better paid and only has to clean inanimate objects. The nurses aid's work longer hours, clean actual people, get abused verbally and physically while doing it, and if they don't do it correctly or quickly, their actions have life and death consequences.
The entire business model has been a total and complete recipe for disaster since its inception.
