This wouldn't happen at Sonic. Or if it did, there would be a means of conflict resolution.

So should I let that person in front of me to continue the alternating pattern? Or should I keep following the car in front of me since I finished ordering before the person in the other lane?
In this instance, you follow the car in front of you and the car in the other lane should allow you to go.
Drive thrus with two lanes really ought to attach a name/order number to the order (like chick fil a) just in case things like this happen, but this type of situation is easily avoided if customers had better awareness of what was going on around them.

This just proves my theory that those double drive thrus At McDonald’s are a bad idea. The average person that eats at McDonald’s is no where near capable of grasping that concept.

I don’t have any epic tales from visits to McDonald’s.
I do. many moon's ago I was in Hammond one night. I was headed home and realized I hadn't eaten yet. I stopped at the McDonald's that in from of the Lowe's on hwy 190. I went inside and ordered and was waiting. Apparently this young worker who was 18-20 years old was arguing with the manager a woman in her late 30's maybe early 40's. This girl just kept yapping at this manager and cursing her. The manager was taking a care of a order and moving about and this young girl kept running her head. Finally this girl made the mistake of putting her finger in the managers face and pushing her. The manager proceeded to beat the shite out of this girl. I will let you decide what the demographics of the women were.

You should have told her you were in the “white” lane and had priority.

Is McDonald's tap water better than any other place?

I never know what the proper etiquette is is when the car in front of me orders and pulls up, and then I order and complete my order before the car in the other lane finishes. So it would normally have been their turn, but I finished my order first.
Whoever completes their order first rolls. The person that got there first and is asking what chicken nuggets taste like, if they are good, what kind of sauce is available, what's on a Big Mac, etc., can sit in line behind the guy that drives up, says he wants a number 3, medium, with a Coke, then pulls forward.

You should have paid for her order

Saw 2 big gals both get out of their cars and proceed to curse and scream at each other at the McDonalds on Jefferson by Drusilla because one drove past a line of cars waiting to split into the 2 lines to place their order.

They don't expect you alternate, you pull forward when you can. They note what the order placer is driving, that way you get your order.

they don’t explain it to they employees either.
i rolled up to the window once and the lady looked at me and in all seriousness asks “what vehicle were you in?”
i said “well i WAS in that maroon KIA 3 cats back, but was in a hurry so i hopped in this truck instead”
she looked confused like she almost believed me for a moment.
