Lump sum payments like that are withheld at a high level, and have been for a long time. The IRS doesn't know the circumstances and can't really figure out what a more precise number would be. It'll be made right, if necessary, when you get your refund.

Seriously, frick the IRS. If people had to write out checks for a portion of every paycheck for those fricks to waste on their bullshite we’d fix some things real quick

Yep…it all gets trued up at tax time. If you want it to be trued up early, file your taxes early.
