In the late 90s, a co-worker of mine took phone interviews on his desk phone during business hours. I could hear him and I know everybody else could. We laughed about it a few times. Then he got a better job.

Have it happen a bunch. They're probably calling the front desk asking to be connected to you.
I've never understood why they think you'd be interested in talking about changing jobs from your desk if you're at that level. For upper level guys I'd understand they assume you have an office.

A guy I work with got a call from a recruiter asking if he was interested in a job opening.
It was the same company that got him hired here hiring for the same position on another team.
It was at this point that I realized just how little they look into your background before suggesting jobs.

This will sound callous but it strains my patience. I understand people want back in the industry but the O&G industry is a shadow of itself paying wages from 15 years ago and an entire mass of throat cutting. I advise everyone who contacts me to move on.

I get about 20 calls a year like that. Crazy thing is that I work for a family business. My last name is the name of the company, yet they never put it together before calling me

Thats the exact script Ive gotten a few times on LinkedIn, but never gotten a direct call at work. I personally wouldnt be happy with a recruiter calling my employer directly. Even if Im not interested, it could give the wrong impression that Im supposedly looking to leave.

During the peak of Houston agency nursing it was not uncommon to have the ER fax bombarded with faxes from travel nurse agencies. Also, our nurses station got cold calls. I received one. Lol.

Happened to me once. She said that I had been “recommended by someone that she couldn’t name”

When picking up extra shifts in some of the smaller ER's, every now and then someone will call asking to speak to the ER doctor on call. Veteran nurses will block it but they are pretty convincing/sounding like it's someone important I need to talk to. As soon as I pick up it's a straight recruiting pitch for me to work in other ER's.
Common or not, I find it extremely unprofessional and do not think it's appropriate for me to talk to these recruiters when I'm actually working. Usually I'm pretty nice about getting off the phone; but if I have a really sick patient or a waiting room full of people, they catch me at the wrong time and I give them an earful. I usually get a follow-up email still asking me to work...

I am on linked in, which has my email attached to it and maybe my personal cell, but just thought it was weird to get a call to my desk phone here in the cube farm. Even if I was interested, I sure as hell wouldn't be entertaining this call on company time in front of my boss's office, which is where I practically sit

If you have a Linked In profile, which most professionals do, it would be pretty simple for someone to call into the main switchboard and ask to be transferred. I always say that it never hurts to talk. You could always just say that you are in the middle of something and is it ok to get back to them with an email if you aren't able to talk openly.
