we have a weekly meeting every Monday morning to talk about what we have going on, and the icebreaker this week was to tell the group something about yourself that we would find interesting …. That was her answer…. and for the inquiring minds, she is a pasty ginger

Are there any common things that everyone else can do, but you can’t?

I’ve never understood people that can’t swim.

I guess I’m privileged because my parents had me in swim lessons growing up but it’s not hard! Just kick your damn legs hell even doggy paddle if you have to

I can't start crappy threads on the OT. Although it is very common around here, and I've been here for many years, I just can't do it.

Eta: J/k baw. Oh and my girlfriend can't swim either.

I find it interesting the number of adults who cannot swim.

Found this out when a coworker/friend freaked out when we decided to go out on a boat. In his defense, he didn't grow up in Louisiana or any other water state.

Maybe in somewhere there's no real water to get in, sure.

But anyone who lives in an area with lakes and rivers and ponds should know how to swim

Does she have a loose poisonous snake in her house too? I mean as long as she likes to live dangerously she might as well

In my prior life, I had a job that required one to be able to swim. They specifically asked you about it in the interview process. We were four months into training and they announced that the following week was "pool week." That weekend one of my buddies, a former D1 football player-super athlete-pasty white guy, pulled me aside and admitted he lied on his application and couldn't swim/was deathly afraid of the water.

We team dragged him through most of the pool week events but the instructors obviously noticed. Especially because he refused to put his head under water. He was a great dude and no one wanted to fail and fire the guy. On the last day they said he either had to put his head under or leave. Watching this 6'2" 250 lb dude shaking like a baby holding onto the side in the deep end was something I will never forget. I volunteered to dive in and pull him under but they wouldn't let me. We stood on the edge of the pool and screamed insults at him until he finally dipped his head under and they passed him.

That has stuck with me all these years as how scared some people are of the water. Which, having been raised around boats and the water, is the most bizarre thing to me.

It isn't usually the physical act it is getting over what usually builds into a fear of the water.

I have been rock climbing since I was a small child. The act of rock climbing is simple it is like climbing a ladder, you just have to identify the rungs. Most reasonably fit adults could be a decent rock climber but fear provides a mental block.

Just like rock climbing, playing the piano, or learning a foreign language the older you start the harder it is to learn and the more reasons to not attempt to learn build up.

I just checked a map that I have... All states now have water.
