If it's the murder I'm thinking of, the kid was sweeping and picking up trash in the parking lot.
Senseless.
Senseless.

It is a sad situation for the true victims, but the choices those young men made that night are the choices that they will have to live with. Justin is partly responsible for that person dying.

Completely. Look. I get it. If I didn't know Justin as well as I did, I wouldn't even be in this thread. He fricked up. Made a really stupid, horrible mistake and now he's contributing to society from behind bars for the rest of his life. It's more a life than Luke Villar gets to experience and Justin is well aware of that.

Your mom was unneeded drivel last night

Only read what you quoted in the OP, but here's my take. Had he called 911 as soon as he was safe to report the crime and then cooperated fully with the investigation, he'd likely be free today. He probably kept quiet and then lied to police, which makes him guilty.

It sucks because when you are young, you make stupid decisions and unfortunately he has to live with this one for the rest of his life.
one time when i was 18 i was drunk and trying to poke a hole in top of my beer can so i could drink it faster. the knife collapsed on my finger and went all the way to the bone. that was a stupid decision.
what the guy in OP's story did is quite significantly something more.

Why does Justin act like he is innocent? I dindu nothing
That's how he comes across anyway.
He's been in for 10, needs to spend 5 more.
Time served

What the frick OP you work for Amnesty Intl? frick Justin and his shitty decision making. Time to pay the fiddler.
What's his criminal history? Seems if this was his first offense, he'd be eligible for parole. likely a recidivist. frick him. He can rot.

The problem is the LA Penal Statute leaves a judge with zero discretion as to sentencing. Mandatory life combined with application of the felony murder doctrine or accomplice liability doctrine is the definition of insanity. This young man would be better served in society helping troubled youth rather than locked up like an animal.

Read the statute. The judge has no discretion in sentencing and cannot take his prior record, or lack thereof, into account. And a life sentence for a crime you did not intend or expect to happen is monstrous.

This young man would be better served using better judgement, having better friends and not making stupid choices. frick him.

Work on reading comprehension. I said if his side of the story were true.

No one here is saying he didn't make bad choices. What people are saying is that a system that gives the courts zero discretion to parole someone whose crime was merely a stupid choice which lead to a horrible and subjectively unexpected and unintended outcome needs to be fixed.
If you get in your car drunk and kill someone, you won't do life in prison. And in that situation, there is more of an expectation that someone would be killed than in the present situation. If you really believe that our tax dollars should continue to house someone who is clearly rehabilitated, I don't know what else to say.

I think a drunk driver that kills someone should get life in prison. If we'd quit patting everyone on the arse for doing stupid shite that ends up with someone dead, maybe we'd have less people being killed. We've been making excuses for criminal behavior and trying to rehab criminals for forever. Let's try it the other way. Make the consequences severe enough and see if that's a deterrent.
I'm sure Justin is a great guy, just got accepted to college and was enrolling in the fall. You're regular "didn't do anything" and never meant to hurt anyone. Just like the hood rats who are just " doin what they do, know what I'm sayin?" But he's a fricking idiot who was involved in someone's death. frick him.
Unless the victim was a shithead criminal too. Then I'm still for life in prison but we have one less shithead o worry about.

Luke and I would have graduated together, so I might be biased toward the situation but the situation is this... They said they were going buy pot... Who the frick buys pot at 6-7 AM on Saturday? With guns? And he was shot in the back trying to run back in the store. frick them all. If Justin really felt he's innocent he would have bailed out the car right then and there instead of driving them away. His fault. He's where he's at because of his decisions.
Luke was the nicest fricking guy you'll meet. He'd been through so damn much he was the last person deserving of that.
As for my sister, you don't want pics trust me, she has been a deviant since she was 16. It started with petty stuff like drugs, petty theft, breaking and entering... But she really messed up when she pulled something like ole Justin here and she was with some druggies when they killed a guy over $80 worth of weed. She was in prison for 2 years before she decided to plea bargain and dime out all involved because she's an idiot and decided to be a mute to the cops so she was slapped with 1st degree. Fast forward a few years and she got popped for being in possession for meth lab paraphernalia. She got out on bond and then decided to skip her court dates. Fast forward a few months and she was arrested for stealing a necklace worth like $3,000 to $5,000...so grand larceny. She's been in prison since.
And no, none of that is made up haha.
She's been an absolute mental/physical/money drain on my family. The best place for her is prison until she's old enough to stop being an idiot.

From the trial:
"On cross examination the defendant admitted
that he knew Roddy and Barrow were going to rob the store that while he waited for them Villar was killed and that after he heard the gunshots he waited in the getaway car until Roddy and Barrow returned then drove away with them."
He drove a car with two guys with guns. He knew they were headed to commit a robbery at least. According to one of his statements, he himself got out of the car with a gun. You can argue about the harshness of the statutes. But when you drive a getaway car for armed robbers, I'd say someone getting killed is within the scope of your contemplation.
