Moved up from the fry station.

Give me your best advice or lessons that you have learned that made you better in your role.

Hey, I started out mopping the floor just like you guys. But now... now I'm washing lettuce. Soon I'll be on fries; then the grill. In a year or two, I'll make assistant manager, and that's when the big bucks start rolling in.

Don't talk over the peons. Let them air out their bullshite.

Then count to 5 after they stop spewing before you speak.

Shut this thread down. It won’t get any better.

1.) treat everyone above you in the pecking order like shite...

2.) be overly nice to everyone below you in the pecking order...

3.) never get involved in a fight between customers and a worker over the fact you are out of spicy...

Pull up for your order...

Be the first one out of the foxhole until you earn their trust.

The customer is very rarely, if ever, right. Offer to fight them if they claim you messed up something. Same goes with your employees. If they give you any lip, fight them. This shows them who is boss and keeps them in line. Also... always be packing. They probably are.

Are you managing former peers or a group of people that you've never worked with before
?

Huge difference.

Congrats! You just moved from having to deal with your own problems to having to deal with everyone’s problems.

The biggest advice is never, ever put yourself in a compromising position in front of your employees. All it takes is one time and they have something over your head.

Remember that the people under you actually make the money for the company, not you. Give them what they need to do their job. Help them help you.

While you need to be there for your employees, it does no help to do their jobs for them. Keep your reviews at a level above so you can actually see the whole situation. Give them chances to grow like you did, and encourage them to learn, help them through their mistakes, and if you frick up, never ask them to fix it on time that you aren't working as well.

Your job is to get the average or better employees ready for the next step, so someone can take over for you when you move up.

I struggled a bit when I first made manager because I want to lead from the front. Management does take leadership skills, but a manager and a leader do differ.
