Everybody thinks the other guy is arguing from emotion and they're the logical one. In reality practically everybody is just parroting knee jerk talking points.
Fun fact: in competitive debating you have to be able to argue both sides of an issue. You don't even know ahead of time which side you'll have to argue.

My brother in law, who in any other situation is a very intelligent and level headed person, is still all ate up with the covid worry
When all of this shite first started, he refused to leave the house. He'd have his groceries delivered, then spend 30 minutes on his front porch disinfecting them.
Last year on Thanksgiving the men were outside talking, and the subject of masks came up. I mentioned that I wasn't a fan, and I avoided wearing them when possible.
My bro in law started freaking out. He said something like "My dad went to war for this country, and you can't wear a fricking mask to protect people?" Which was the strangest appeal to emotion I've ever witnessed.
I've since learned to stay out of any covid conversations with the family, because my opinions aren't very popular.
Now I just laugh at them.
