'Just 9 deputies work to protect all 139,000 of you:“ Tangi Sheriff mad over failed vote

Tangipahoa Parish voters Saturday rejected a sales tax proposal that would raise nearly $25 million to boost sheriff's department operations over the next decade.
Voters in March had rejected, by a 52-48 margin, a perpetual three-quarter-cent sales tax. Complete but unofficial returns Saturday night showed the 10-year proposal failing by an even wider margin at 57-43.
Sheriff Gerald Sticker had campaigned at local markets, telling voters what they could get for an extra 75 cents on a $100 grocery bill.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office responded after the failed vote, saying they will continue to work "understaffed and underfunded."
"The men and women of the TPSO deserve better; better wages and much needed additional manpower," TPSO said on social media. "Sleep tight tonight, Tangipahoa, while just 9 deputies work to protect all 139,000 of you." Welp the people have spoken: No new taxes

Tangi has exploded in population over the last 10 years. Lots of sales and property taxes. What is the parish doing with all that revenue?
More taxes isn’t the answer. This state already has one of the highest effective tax rates in the nation.

Good for them.
Our government at every level is way too bloated. Take some money from some other stupid arse thing they're spending it on and put it towards more police instead of trying to tax the citizens even more. We all know they have some type of program or money going to something that's unnecessary that they could use to hire more police. But I guess that'd probably take money out of some slimy local politician's pockets, so it's better for them to just try and tax us more.

The police don’t protect you anymore. They just mostly come get the bodies now.

Good point

I don't know about Tangipahoa Parish specifically, but in general sheriff's departments are cash cows for its leaders. Ex-sheriffs often retire wealthy.

The police have no responsibility to protect individuals. Telling people they do is one of the biggest lies ever told.

Tell the deputies to go get on the highways/freeways and write tickets to make up for falling revenue. Lord knows they've got enough people driving like assholes through their parish to make $25m in a year.
Go work for the money instead of asking for handouts.

Exactly! If our state and local governments can't get by on the existing taxes, how are the other states with taxes 3% lower possibly managing.
Nope, you got all you're gonna get, figure it out.

The sheriff's office facebook post tonight sounds like something a spoiled kid would say when they didn't get their way.

Daniel Edwards left him with a 3 million dollar surplus. He ran though it in almost 18 months. Changed uniforms, started a new motorcycle division which he bought 5-6 Harley’s for. Spending $400K on software replacement. Tangi deserves better than Sheriff spend a lot.

A lot of people don’t realize that protecting individuals is not the role of law enforcement.
Police responsibilities are enforcing laws, preventing and investigating crime, and maintaining public order to ensure the safety of the community.
They do protect dignitaries and select public officials in the scope of their duties.
Protecting each individual of the public is not their responsibility.

Wrong. That’s 100% false. Edwards and his crew took all cash reserves on their way out the door in the form of retirement payouts for the top leadership. He was doing a $8 to $1 match to their 401k’s along with paying the top brass a $1200 a month “car allowance” for their F250’s that they also left with.

They were running on Windows 98. That shite should have been changed long ago. The old software wasn’t even subject to support. They didn’t have a choice but to upgrade.
Your post is either misinformed or purposefully misleading.
Not once in this thread has it been mentioned that the new sales tax was countered by a reduction in property millage. The Sheriff is dealing with an agency that is underfunded while the population has increased and, by the way, Tangi is the largest Parish by land mass in the state. There are miles upon miles of unincorporated area they are covering with those 9 deputies a shift.
Prior to the new Sheriff, Edwards was paying his guys a whopping $14 an hour. Disgraceful. Sticker raised it to $18 which still isn’t enough. Changing the uniform color isn’t an additional cost. They have to buy uniforms yearly regardless. You understand clothes wear out, right? They bought some motorcycles for Traffic Division. It was that or new cars. Again, a recurring expense one way or the other.

This is what I always ask in these situations.
Sales tax is completely scalable, so it's not like the TPSO is receiving a set stipend each year.

Just 9 deputies to write tickets and file reports after you are burglarized.
Posted on 11/16/25 at 7:43 am to BowDownToLSU
Need more officers to sit roadside and hand out revenue generating speeding tickets.
You know, to "protect" you
