I used to drink a few with a veteran who was there that day. He climbed the cliff at point du hoc(sp). He watched his buddies get picked off one by one as he made his way to the top. He was 17. Last I heard he was at the veterans home in Jackson. Probably no longer around. He was an awesome person

The 6th of June was also the date that the events chronicled in the song “Convoy” took place.

I visited Normandy and took an extensive tour of the D-Day beaches in April, 2019, just weeks before the 75th anniversary. Great trip.

Was the dark of the moon on the sixth of June
In a Kenworth pullin' logs
Cab-over Pete with a reefer on
And a Jimmy haulin' hogs
We is headin' for bear on I-one-oh
'Bout a mile outta Shaky Town
I says, "Pig Pen, this here's the Rubber Duck
"And I'm about to put the hammer down"

A story he told me several years ago. He went to Normandy several times for various reasons. He was there on June 6 as an invited guest of course. It was during the Clinton administration. Bill walked down lines of vets shaking hands. Hillary stayed in the limo until the press showed up. She then got out and started shaking hands. Several vets refused to acknowledge her

I wouldn’t blame them if they had just stayed on the boat.
Many boats couldn’t make it up all the way to the beach, they got hung up offshore.
Failure was simply not an option to those guys.

Of course the Europeans got the cushy job of walking onto Sword Beach and drinking tea while the Americans got chopped up at Omaha Beach.

Funny you think all those people were straight and white?
You've been watching to many modern movies and tv, haven't you? Step away from the propaganda.

Perhaps the Army Air Force overshooting their bombing run had a little something to do with it... the Boys didn't even have bomb craters to take cover in.

Just think how much worse it could have been if Hitler had not fallen for Patton’s ghost army likely leading the invasion at Calais.

Went to Normandy a couple of days before the 75th anniversary. They had many veterans there that were returning for the first time since that day. Almost all were in wheelchairs now due to age. Seeing them that day was very emotional to see

Has France ever returned the favour?

I'd prefer to land on Utah Beach, if I may, Sir.
