it’s incredible the amount of balls it would take to move forward once the ramp dropped.

the carnage you would see in that one split second. the muzzle flashes on the cliffs. the water splashing from explosions.

and they walked forward into it.

I wouldn’t say balls but a sense of duty and an unwritten code that men have with one another. I bet a large majorly of these troops had fear. You had to be not human not to. But you had to do your duty and if the men around you were risking their lives, then you join them and help them.

One of my great-uncles flew two missions on D-Day. He was a B-17 pilot. First mission was an attempt to take out beach defenses; the second was against a railroad yard at Le Harve to hinder German troop movements. 549th Squadron, 385th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force our of Great Ashfield, England.

He retired twenty years later as a Colonel. Later flew B-29 and B-37 bombers for SAC. After he retired he never flew again. He said he wouldn’t fly on a plane he wasn’t in control of.

The 6th of June was also the date that the events chronicled in the song “Convoy” took place.

You’re welcome.

I wouldn’t blame them if they had just stayed on the boat.

I became friends with Roscoe Brannon in Montgomery.
From his obituary: LINK
quote:

A thirty year Navy Veteran, he landed on Normandy on D-Day, and was treating casualties within two hours of the first landings, and also served in the Korean Conflict.

Could you imagine how D Day would turn out if today’s crop of 17-20 year olds were leading the charge? The carnage from emotional support animals alone would be astronomical. But at least the soldiers would have their preferred pronouns displayed on their uniform.

My grandmother lost a first cousin on the beaches. From what she told me he was killed either by a mine or mortar blast. When his mother got the notification she had a nervous breakdown.

One of the most amazing aspects of the Normandy landings was how light the overall casualties were compared to what was expected. That’s not to say it was a cakewalk, far from it. Total dead on r allied side was about 4,500, the majority of which were American. But the Allied leadership anticipated far higher casualties.

Weren't the cannons on the battleships suppose to take out the the machine gun nests on the cliffs?

Edit: Jimbeam set me right. It was British air raids not battleships. Thanks for correction JB.

The Allies had complete aerial superiority over the beachheads that day. Except for a strafing run by "Pips" Priller and his wingman, German air was a complete no-show.
