Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (NY) introduced The Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment, and Expungement (MORE) Act.
quote:
If enacted, the bill would remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act, thus decriminalizing the substance at the federal level and enabling states to set their own policies. Descheduling will also allow the existing state-legal marijuana industry to no longer be barred from accessing financial services or standard tax treatment as every other legal business. Similarly, veterans will have better access to medical marijuana with VA doctors no longer risking federal prosecution for filling out state-legal medical recommendations.
Given the restrictions the marijuana industry has had to abide by under section 280E of the IRS code, existing enterprises would have a significantly lower overall tax burden than under the current policy of prohibition.
The bill would tax marijuana products at a modest 5% to establish a Trust Fund to assist state and local governments in expunging criminal records and setting up regulatory structures for marijuana’s lawful production and distribution.

Good legislation. ZERO chance it even gets out of committee.

LEO groups won’t let that happen

That'd be pretty fricking sweet.
And I'm all for the expungement part provided these people have no other more serious charges that aren't drug related.

It's Big Pharma and Big Beer that are the heavy hitters against legalization. A surprising number of law enforcement are in favor of reworking the laws

They're just trying to set this up as an issue for the 2020 election. I have my doubts that old guard guys like Nadler, Biden, etc truly want to legalize at the federal level.

Sheriff's groups are about to come out of the woodwork

Good. trump needs to support it. It will doubly ensure victory.

FWIW big pharma is against it more than the pigs/prisons

I have a feeling Trump would likely not fight legalization. This is about the only issue that Dems could run strongly on, but if Trump get on board, it kinda deflates their strategy.

That would be great, but it's 2019 so if one side supports it, the other has to dig in their heels as firmly as they can against it.

This is the only hope to have "bipartisanship" on this issue.

Governor Bevin, in an election year, has already said he’ll NEVER allow legalization in “his state” (Kentucky).
It may get decriminalized here but they’ll find a way to frick Kentuckians with their Bible Belt bullshite.

That's what voting is for. If you're in the minority that's life, not you getting fricked.

Eh, Trump is already doing more for prison reform than any other president has done so this would make sense as part of the package. It also gives him a chance to show he's willing to work with the other side. I seriously doubt there are many weed one-issue voters, but this could help bring in the independents given almost 60% of the population agrees it should be legal. The big question is if the Republicans get on board. Maybe if he rallies the troops and Boehner gives them enough lobby money they can pull it off.

I live in a state where we have the largest opioid epidemic in the country. Making marijuana more accessible for pain management would go a long way to helping the people in this state.
We also have a huge pension crisis that would benefit financially from the legalization of marijuana as a new revenue steam.
No, I’m getting fricked by people who don’t get out and vote. Our Governor was elected in a 30% turnout.
