The article was a bit too nostalgic for my taste. I get that TL has crime issues. But I don't think it will completely stop people from going there anytime soon.

It seems like we address the housing issue with TL every few months. But no one can come up with a realistic solution to the problem.

With Uber being in BR now, a future streetcar, and the Nicholson gateway project there is no way Tigerland stays the go to spot without getting rid of the section 8 housing. If section 8 stays students will start going downtown or to bars that will be built along Nicholson.

We used to walk to those bars

In the mid 2000's I never expected to have the chance to drive drunk. I lived on Brightside and expected to walk home no matter what. Never worried. Then right as I was graduating, things turned. Wouldn't dare try that now.

I wonder what kind of money it would take to just buy all of those complexes and tear them down and start over. It's prime real estate and would significantly improve the area. But I guess there is still to much undeveloped land south of campus that someone can throw a new apartment complex on that's more cost effective than that. But that's only doubling down on the problem. Every time a new complex opens, another complex becomes "old" and the rent goes down and ghetto moves in.

Can't really fight it. The law and the courts are in favor of it. Chalmette just a couple years ago fought the building of a new project. Federal judge ordered it built and fined the parish.

it is amazing how small Uber has made Baton Rouge. When I was in school, I use to think going out downtown was an impossible hike across the galaxy.

What use to be a $20 cab from GD or campus to downtown is a $5 uber.

Other than LSU and the capital (maybe the port) Baton Rouge offers next to nothing to Louisiana. I would imagine that respectable people will be moving out in the next decade.

With the exception of respectable I hope you are one of them.

Does anyone really think BR is the only city with Sec 8 and bad areas? Some fricking stupid people on here.

I mean they would rather run from the undesirables than face them.

Yeah, to some extent you're right. People would rather find a new home than fight crime and trashy neighbors. And along with the neighborhood, the schools get trashed too.

Agreed, I remember going out downtown feeling like it was tall task. But uber has simplified that issue.

getting an uber to drop me off in front of Taylor Hall is so much better than the bus taking forever for the quarter mile walk from parking lot

also turns out about the same on money as well

What can people do to "face them"?

Section 8 is the law. Joe homeowner/tax payer has no choice but to leave for higher ground

Letting 16-17 year olds comprise 70 percent of your bar profits also doesn't help any of these issues.

The only thing a homeowner could do is call the cops and code enforcement whenever possible. But that doesn't solve the problem at all.

true. I could see a number of bars in TL dying off. But I don't really see Reggies & Freds going anywhere.

I'm a bit apprehensive of new college-bars opening along Nicholson like another poster suggested.

Yep, Section 8 housing is welfare for landlords.
It needs to go.

I would love to see Fred's, Reggies. JL's buy the property between Bogies and Rotolo's and set up shop there.

The ridiculous rapid construction of unneeded large apartment complexes should tell everyone LSU needs to raise tuition. These kids have the money.

Nicholson is a trainwreck of a road, I wouldn't go to any bar there so many frickin lights and idiots.

Downtown needs some more unique spots and different types of things instead of regular bars and Jersey Shore knock offs like 1913.

I doubt it's possible but I really liked the way Alabama is set up, where you have a bunch of areas of bars you can walk to that lead up to the stadium.

The underage kids aren't the ones causing the issues. I worked at Reggie's from 2006-2008. The only real issues were your standard barfights. It wasn't until 2011 that you began to see more violence involving weapons. Students were getting shot walking back to their cars near Tiger Plaza. The section 8 housing has brought a lot of trash into that area. I remember walking to Domino's after a game recently and being scared because of the crap that loitered all around.
