While this is clearly their top tier shoe, I prefer going with a hard rubber sole, like AE Dantite or whatever they call it. Wooden soles just perform poorly and are terrible for walking the streets. When I was in DC, they’d soak through with regularity.

I’m tempted by this sale but I don’t think it’s practical for my use anymore. I dont live the dress shoe life anymore.

Good find and recommendation though.

Or get a shoe w a JR sole. Twice the density of an AE regular leather sole.

I love my Johnston Murphy dress shoes. I’m far fro a fashion afficiando but they last forever amd are very comfortable.

I didn’t know that JM had a bad name with OT ballers.

The regular ones aren't what they used to be. The last couple of pair I owned only lasted me around a year.

I'm fairly cheap, but a good pair of dress shoes is worth the money to me, assuming you wear them a lot like I typically do. A $100 pair of shoes like Cole Haan or J&M usually last me around a year. A $300 pair of Allen Edmonds lasts me 10 years with a few resoles.

They used to make a good shoe. THan they shipped the production overseas and used cheaper materials. Most of their shoes have glued soles, not goodwyear welts or even blake stitching.

What you think is a good shoe is nothing like it used to be. The Aristocrafts are better made and normally cost close to $300. Much more than you see for J&M at Dillards, for example. That's why its a good sale.

Fall guy: Next time, get a resole with JR soles. You will pay more but the sole will last MUCH longer.

That's probably why JM/AE/Alden make shoes with leather soles. Don't think I've ever seen anything from them with a wooden sole. That would be nonsensical.

Not something I had even really considered, but the dress fashion industry has to be going the way of cruise ships currently with the entire professional class remote. Brutal.

Sweet. I picked up one of the new wool/leather Strands earlier this year. Nice change up and great shoe.

I'm pretty cheap too, but I always found JM to be a good value. Now, the last pair I bought I only wore for about a year before Covid hit so they've only been worn 2-3 times in the last year, but they seemed to holding up relatively well up until that point.

That being said, I'm trying to make a conscience effort to upgrade my wardrobe to at least the last decade. I have absolutely no sense of style and that never bothered me, until changing cities and I really have felt out of place by my clothes in the time or two I got out (a few dates, one party) I went to the Galleria a few weeks ago and spent a nice chunk of change on clothes that I really needed, and spent the day there looking for sales and also talking to a lot of the female sales staff about what's popular and whats not. The fact of the matter, is that I suck at clothes.

It's a known weakness, I'm trying to do better.

Yeah, I'm not into fashion by any stretch of the imagination. I'll usually just ask my wife or daughters if something looks stupid.

Probably 75% of my clothes come from Orvis or LL Bean. I dress like a mid 40s white guy for sure

We are in retail. Fortunately, we sell children's and teen clothes. All of our friends that are in women's or men's clothes are getting killed right now. Not sure how many of them will make it much longer.

Sorry to hear that. I don't think my job will be permanently remote but I don't see any reason not to dress comfortably at home all day.

I work in IT too but not for a tech company. Most of our employees never left the office. I'm just on one of a handful of teams that can do 100% of my job remotely.

My particular area of the building is fairly difficult for us to spread out so they sent us all home with no return date. I think when the numbers go down and the vaccine becomes more widely distributed I'll be back though.

I’ve got ten or twelve pair of Allen Edmonds. I just don’t see any reason to go with anything any different. They are on sale a lot and there is always the Shoebank.

I have a new pair of Carmina and Meermin shoes I got in March. Wore them for the first time this month. Now if I can figure out how all my slacks shrunk a few sizes just hanging in the closet

See I don't have that. When I have a girlfriend for long stretches at a time, my wardrobe style increases.

The opposite of what should occur for consistency. I don't date for a year or so and my clothes go back to looking like 1995.

There are other brands with more refined construction. Allen Edmonds on sale is a great value and I have 3 or 4 pairs. But when you are getting to the point of buying your 10th or 12th pair of dress shoes, you are buying something you really want. And by that time, there's nothing left from AE that I want.
