See him wasted on the sidewalk in his jacket and his jeans
Wearin' yesterday's misfortunes like a smile
Once he had a future full of money, love, and dreams
Which he spent like they was goin' outta style
And he keeps right on a-changin' for the better or the worse
Searchin' for a shrine, he's never found
Never knowin' if believin' is a blessin' or a curse
Or if the goin' up was worth the comin' down

He's a poet and he's a picker, he's a prophet and he's a pusher
He's a pilgrim and a preacher and a problem when he's stoned
He's a walkin' contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction
Takin' every wrong direction on his lonely way back home

He has tasted good and evil in your bedrooms and your bars
And he's traded in tomorrow for today
Runnin' from his devils, Lord, and reachin' for the stars
And losin' all he's loved along the way
But if this world keeps right on turnin' for the better or the worse
And all he ever gets is older and around
From the rockin' of the cradle to the rollin' of the hearse
The goin' up was worth the comin' down

My favorite KK song.

Speaking of nearly last performances:

June Carter Cash died, and her service was up in southwest Virginia at the Carter homestead.

Chanel 10 Knoxville attended and taped Johnnie's farewell song to June.

Johnny Cash was there, not doin' well. He sang "Journey's almost over". I cried. His voice singing that song is in my head as long as I live and it still moves me.

He rides a feed lot and clerks in a market on weekends selling tobacco and beer
His dreams of tomorrow surrounded by fences
But he'll dream tonight of when fences weren't here
He blazed the trail with Lewis and Clark
And eyeball to eyeball Ol' Wyatt backed down
He stood shoulder to shoulder with Travis in Texas
And rode with the Seventh when Custer went down
This is the last cowboy song the end of a hundred year waltz
Voices sound sad as they're singing along another piece of America's lost

But I love the Wilbury's as well.

Tweeter and the Monkey Man were hard up for cash
They stayed up all night selling cocaine and hash
To an undercover cop who had a sister named Jan
For reasons unexplained she loved the Monkey Man
Tweeter was a Boy Scout 'fore she went to Vietnam
And found out the hard way, nobody gives a damn
They knew that they found freedom just across the Jersey line
So they hopped into a stolen car, took Highway 99
And the walls came down
All the way to hell
Never saw them when they're standing
Never saw them when they fell
The undercover cop never liked the Monkey Man
Even back in childhood he wanted to see him in the can
Jan got married at fourteen to a racketeer named Bill
She made secret calls to the Monkey Man from a mansion on the hill

IMHO cash’s version of Hurt just drips with emotion. I like it better than the NIN version

He’s not a bad singer, he just isn’t a great one.

Being able to craft lyrics and melodies is one thing. Being able to deliver them is a whole different skill set

They’re both awesome but I really think Tom Petty was the best song writer ever . The rest of the Wilburys were amazing also .

Towns Van Zandt and Dylan are two other members of that club.
