Sounds like members of the OT/family members of the members of the OT go to some shady churches. Never have been to one like those mentioned, and never heard of one like that before.

I don't think he thought it was shady, as much as he thought it was handled in poor taste, especially considering they had just had their second child and those little things get expensive. It was a small community church though in Flowood, MS .

However, I think its shady AF, but I distrust all religion.

I thought Lakewood signed a new top talent to replace Osteen.

Well, to some degree, I think religion is like crack. Take Scientology for example. They basically entertain people with lavish events and it makes them feel good. They get a high that makes them feel uplifting. And because of that feeling, they want to continue to go back and those people look for more. They want more of what he is selling so they buy his books, etc, etc..

You're just proving my point dude. It's not a country club or a church, it's a scam.

Is your brother on a church kick
Seems like just a different kind of dopesick
Better off to teach a dog a card trick
Than try to have a point and make it clear

So you've never been to a successful church, and you think that's a good thing?

In all fairness.. can people at least wait until the water goes down to see if this guy is going to put his money where his mouth is. I see no issue here

If you define successful as telling people how much to give, no, I haven't been to one like that.

But I have been to one that within the last 5 years went from a small, put together church (basically an old house turned into a church) to a very nice church. But the congregation is fairly wealthy and is not shy when it comes to donating to the church.

I'm not saying I haven't been to churches where people don't give generously. I'm saying I've never been to one where the Pastor was pressuring parishioners to give "their fair share".

While he was waiting for something to install he asked me to come in. He was in the pastor's office and opens up a drawer. Pulls out a folder and told me to check out what's in it. It was filled with W2s. He "asked" everyone to give him a copy so that he can tell them how much they have to "donate" in a year (10%). I seriously doubt that is the only church that does such a thing.. So call that what you want.

Chris, this never happened.

That's pretax to you buddy

Consider it a tax on stupidity. No one forces them to give money. And if they have a full understanding of what they are giving to, its their choice. Mind your own business.

How can the stupid have a full understanding? Seems quite the contradiction you got there. Don't worry, we won't let the poors dirty the carpet

Yep, I've only stumbled across his show maybe 4-5 times but seems a stretch to label Joel Osteen "a man of God" as I've seen here a couple of times. The little I've seen was more like a motivational speaker for sure.

In the bible and the Constitution, success is defined by how much money you can make in the name of God, the means are secondary.

Sorry to hear you've wasted so much time at failing churches, but that's not anyone's fault but yours. People like you need to take responsibility for themselves and stop criticizing more successful churches.

Dude that's a scam hiding as a church. That's not a church or a country club, just a scam.

This is why I quit attending altogether. I am too old to let someone else tell me how to live or how much of my money to hand over to them. I am spiritual these days, but have written organized religion off altogether. If others want to attend, that's their business and I won't criticize them for it. But it's no longer for me.

You clearly have trouble reading. Maybe you should read the rest of my post and not just the first line that bothered you.

ETA: you should also pick up a Bible if you believe the means are secondary.
